The ability to make 'placeholder articles'

Article-links Global-updates placeholders

What is the issue

There does not appear to be a feature that would allow a user while writing an article to create a new article reference and then reference that article in another draft before making the reference article itself

How would this help

Allowing users to reference placeholder titles while they work then globally update this across all other articles would allow time saving when world building. If a user has a evil king that they want to reference in a number of article but have not fleshed out the name etc, currently they would have to wait to name the character then go back and insert the article references. This way the a reference article could be made, referenced to and changed all without having to generate the article first.   As mentioned before placeholders would allow for faster world building and removed the need to backtrack through older articles to add in article links. This idea comes from a similar feature in Obsidian where links are updated and created globally. Alternativley when you make a reference link in an article the article is automatically made so the author does not have to do so manually.

Follow up

I've seen a couple of people say that this can be done with variables. I feel this is being said because I haven't properly explained what this is. Variables work fine when you are not making an article. I am wanting to have article names to update globally and be refference before the article is fully created. While yes this functions similar to variables the key difference is the intent to have an article there and in multiple other locations, and have that process be made easier
Another follow up from the comments left by both those who agree and disagree with the idea. This is NOT just making an article to reference to. In World Anvil currently once you make an article and reference it any time you change the orignal article you have to manually change all reference instances to it. While I have seen solutions to this using variables this seems like it could be simplified a lot and would still require manually changing the link attached the the variable as changing the name of an article changes the link url

The Team's Response

Variables already allow for this functionality :)

I understand the desire for this. One thing that I've noticed that perhaps isn't exactly the same issue is that when I change the name of an article, the text of references to it in other articles does not change. It seems like it should, or at least there should be an easy way to change it in bulk.

I loved this feature in Kanka. I think it would be greate here.

You can still do this with variables. Make a "Text, Advanced" variable, copy the article block or the article link of the article you want to add, and then when you put it in the text box for the variable, a window pops up when you mouse over the variable link that let's you click to go to the article. Alternatively, you could do a link type variable, just use the actual URL for the article rather than the @thing. The link variable will work and look exactly like a normal article reference.   This would allow you to name the variable whatever you want, put placeholder notes, etc. You could also make a placeholder article, put the link in a link variable, and then just edit the title of the variable once your article was complete.

There are already placeholder articles. Refer to the "MENTIONING A NON-EXISTING ARTICLE" section in this codex article.   https://www.worldanvil.com/w/WorldAnvilCodex/a/mention-system#:~:text=On%20World%20Anvil%20it%20is,are%20shown%20as%20you%20type.   You can also just click the plus button in the bottom right corner to create an article while you are writing on another article.

This would be really useful to me as I often only have a vague idea of what something is going to be. I'm also a huge perfectionist so once I create an article I want to complete it entirely, which often isn't possible and messes up my workflow. Placeholder articles would take that pressure off and make the process easier for me.

Use variables? I've used those for a temporary name that I wanted to be able to change later.

World Anvil isn't Obsidian. You can already achieve what you want by using variables. Though we'll need a better way to edit them in the future.
