An Option for Sorting Alphabetically that Skips the First Word of an Article's Title

alphabetical sorting-options sorting

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

The title may seem silly, but hear me out: I'd like to be able to sort my article titles alphabetically, but ignore definite or indefinite articles like "the" or "a" when deciding which letter the article title starts with. Adding a little check box to the interface when editing an article in Articles and Category Management would allow for skipping the first word, if so desired.   Alternatively, a field that allows for entering a number that denotes the amount of words to be skipped could also fulfill this function, with the default being 0.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Currently, if you want an article named "The Black Knight" to appear under "B", you need to manually drag it after sorting all articles alphabetically. Toggling whether to skip the first word of the article title would remove this need without requiring that every article follow the same naming procedure.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Similarly to being able to skip definite and indefinite articles, this feature could allow people to include titles like "Lord", "Sir", or "Dr." in their article titles without the person being listed under the respective letter of their title and rather their name.   If variable numbers of skippable words are possible, it would allow for alphabetically sorting things like noble house names that start with "House of/de/von ...", putting the entry in the alphabetical order of the name of the house.

Follow up

I'm a little surprised by how deadset some people are against this. The main argument I see is that people should be following style guides and not using definite or indefinite articles to begin with and... well... I'm already using them and I have no intention of stopping. I'm merely suggesting a means that would make it more convenient for me and maybe some others without impacting people that do want to adhere to said style guides. As for it messing with the autolinker, I can assure you not being able to differentiate between the job "Mason" and the fictional pro-wrestler "The Mason" causes far more havoc than the occasional article.   The only real downside I can see here is the potential opportunity cost of other features that wouldn't be worked on.   I also want to clear up that the feature would be a toggleable skip of 1 or more words at the beginning of each article title that could be set up individually for each article, with the default option changing nothing about how articles are alphabetized. This would be a flexible way of accomodating other languages and, again, not impact anyone that wants to avoid definite articles in their article titles.

Makes sense to me. I avoid using "the" in the beginning of my article titles to avoid this problem, but I'd rather not have to! The title of the article isn't just for the codex, it also appears at the very top of the article. Sometimes you want that header to have a "the" or a "House of" in the beginning. A completely different solution would be to allow the article's main header to be editable separate from the article's title within the article list, but that's a different feature suggestion altogether.

While I generally agree with trying to exclude the/a/an/etc. in titles, there are times when it's simply unavoidable. The title of prose or plot, or the name of a character or event, are prime examples.   WA obviously can't keep a list of every word in every language to ignore when alphabetizing, but there are alternatives. In addition to what you and others have suggested, there could be an alternative display name field similar to the alternative date field for historical events.

I see where you’re coming from. To make this more useful for other languages, however, it would probably be better to have an option to manually mark words or parts of words that can be ignored by the sorting engine (although Idk how complicated this would be to implement from a technical perspective).

I think this feature would be hard to implement, but I feel like criticism is unfairly Anglo-centric. Latin and most of its descendants can't drop their article without looking weird or childish. Same with many other languages. This is a serious concern and should be taken seriously.

I am deeply confused about the reaction this post is getting...? This is a great suggestion in my opinion, and boyo, the autolinker is already confused in everything that's not English xD And even there, irregular changes to words already pose problems: You have a group of spies called the Kingsmen, but want to write "He is a kingsman."? Newsflash, Autolink doesn't recognize the word.   As a German worldbuilder, I support this suggestion and would love to see it implemented, if possible. Der, Die, Das and all their forms a confusing enough.   And to the point themrbeasley made: I am glad for encyclopedias and academic writing and their way of getting around this, but that might not be everyones style? If you want to style your articles like... entries of a diary, maybe, they won't follow the same style guide as an encyclopedia.   Let people live and design their worlds as they please :)

I completely understand where you’re coming from and your frustration, but simple dropping the “the” has worked wonders for me, both in appearances for my worlds and organization purposes. If all else fails, writing “Mason, The” has worked for me. This seems like it would be a pain to implement and not entirely useful for most people judging from prior responses. Sorry to downvote, I’d just rather see the team work on less convoluted things that are harder for us to fix on our own.

At the risk of muddying the water still further, rather than getting into all the complexities of skipping N words with all the associated logical complexities for coding, wouldn't a nice (relatively) simple and clean alternative but to just have a separate sort field for an article which defaults to its name? If you want to sort it differently it becomes the responsibility of the article owner to amend that field. Not only can you drop "The" but any complex edge cases or multiple words can be dealt with in whatever way the article owner likes without making life complicated for the programmers. As an article owner you'd have full control of the sort order. As the programmer you just sort on the sort field using whatever it is populated with (defaulted to the name)? There are some things that need thinking about to implement this, like what happens to the sort field if the article name is changed (I say nothing, the user has to change it manually) but it seems to get around many problems.

I am in agreement with TheMrBeasley. Best to get out of the habit of prefacing with "The" in most instances.

Encyclopedia entries are usually organized alphabetically. Starting each entry with a definite or indefinite article could disrupt the alphabetical ordering. For instance, if every entry starting with "The" were listed under "T," it would not only be cumbersome but also inefficient for readers searching for specific information.   Many style guides and editorial standards specifically advise against using articles at the beginning of titles or headings unless they are part of a proper noun or a quotation. This convention is widely adopted in various forms of academic and reference writing, not just encyclopedias.   Beginning your titles this way can also confuse the Autolinker feature.   Bad form all around, change the way you title pages rather than the whole website. While it may make sense within a page's content to talk about how a thing is referred to colloquially (which may include the article, such as The Batman vs Batman), the title is not where you make that distinction for the reason noted here.

While this would surely be awesome, I'm not sure, how this works with localization since there are different languages in use and having to programme it for all the languages sounds awful. Maybe if you could set up a list yourself for your world, that would work.
