What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

It could be really usefull to allow th diplomacy web to show the evolution of the relation between organizations. For a story or campaign where diplomatic interactions can change drastically over time, this could be useful.
I saw that you can add several diplomatic relations to an organization with the same counterpart. Maybe by being able to tag the diplomatic relation itself instead of the whole organization article, we could add multiple iterations of diplomacy web that show the evolution of the relations during campaings/stories/history, like #diplomacy-scenario01 ; #diplomacy-scenario02. When the relation doesn't change, add multiple tags of the different stages of the scenario would keep the relation in the next diplomacy web.
Maybe there could be another way to achieve this, but I've also been trying to figure out what might be the technically easiest approach to implementing such a system, with my limited knowledge of the functioning of the Anvil website.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

The diplomacy web is very usefull, but for now if we want to track changes of diplomatic relations, we need to make mutiple dummy copies of the same organization, which is a little bit clunky.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I suppose that with the good tag, it could also allow to create "secret" diplomatic relations. I really think that a tag based system would allow countless possibilities.

The Team's Response

That is a brilliant idea and it would be amazing to see an evolutionary relationships tree but 1. This has disproportionately very little support compared to the effort of making it happen (it will be a complete redesign of all the relationships system to become time-based (kind of going from 2D to 3D) 2. I think that even if we were going to do it - hardly anyone will use it due to the seer complexity of inputting the data in a matrix not only across multiple organizations but also through units of time. 10 organizations means 100 entries per unit of time, which means 1000 entries only for 10 "steps" of time.   I would love to do it but this will need a feature that clearly hits both lowest level thresholds.

While I agree with ddaniel that it "feels very costly in a technical sense", I strongly disagree that the use case is niche.   I think having the option to set a "base diplomacy web" or relationship, and alter it according to a timeline / date, or tag it as suggested by the OP, would open lots of doors.

I love the idea of being able to show moving relationship (perhaps by using dates for relationship-values, or allowing diplomacy-webs to use a self-defined set of 'groups' so to speak, like with maps?), but I can imagine it also might be technically challenging. But yeah, being able to go 'Start Dino War', 'River Pirate Armistice', 'Return of the Udans' and see how the relationships changed during those events, would be real neat.

This feels very costly in a technical sense. The idea itself is good, but I feel like the use case is rather niche, also change of diplomacy over time would be a chronicles / timelines thing imo, although making a timeline for each nation's diplomacy is a bit overkill.

This would be incredibly useful if implemented easily. As it is now, I have to try and squeeze the general overall relationship into one box.

I would love to eventually he able to show the diplomacy webs changing over time either by the creation of new webs or a single web being able to slide around in time.   I have regions that have hated each other and made peace. I have a civil war where members of factions chose to side in an opposite direction from when the Unification Wars happened just thirty years before, or some who didn't like each other then really hate each other now.
