Template for Symbols

New Feature Addition · Articles & templates · Created by P-47 Thunderbolt

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

There is no template for symbols, e.g. logos, flags, insignia, etc. This is especially relevant for national flags which often have storied histories and complicated meanings, but also extends to symbols of commercial, religious, or military organizations among many other things.   Note: This is distinguished from the "item" template in that it is as regards a symbol in the abstract, not the concrete (so the American flag, not an American flag).

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Please add a template for symbols.   Prompts can include description; history; meaning (or symbolism method of display; and traditions, rituals, or customs.   "Micro-prompts," i.e. the ones that show up on the sidebar, can include date created, date adopted, date retired, official name, and alternative names.   Connections can include designer, related organization, secondary organizations, related ethnicity/culture, secondary ethnicities/cultures, related geographical location, secondary geographical locations, predecessor symbol, and successor symbol.

The Team's Response

Symbols, written, etched, embodied or otherwise are in fact traditions. We can investigate the idea of adding prompts to the template specifically for symbols if something is missing but it should not become a new template.

Like SoulLink mentioned, the item template doesn't need to be restricted to physical items, and since the Item template actually covers most of the things you are asking for, I don't think an entirely new template is necessary (or likely). However, a few additions could maybe be given to the Item template to make it more appropriate for symbols (and perhaps improve the template too) : 1. a prompt for appearance ; 2. "Symbol" added as a dropdown Item Type option ; 3. a connector between Tradition and Item (either in the Item template or in the Tradition template).

I understand the distinction and point here, and agree in theory, but I also feel like a balance needs to be struck without there being a hundred article types ... I'm generally in favour, but wouldn't be upset if this didn't get done.

I agree with Wild Dryad, the WA team is not likely to add new templates any time soon, but it's worth a try.   I am really about the gods template being rejected despite lots of votes, that was uncharacteristically unfair on the WA team's part.

Ditto about the vote on the gods template. I doubt we'll be getting any more templates no matter how much the community wants them.   I think this is a good idea, though, so here's my coins (for whatever they're worth).

Considering the gods article got over the maximum vote and still didn't pass I doubt this will succeed, items article can be used for it.

I would support these additions to the item template. The item template is not just for concrete objects, but for types of objects as well. Alternatively a symbol could be a tradition.
