Power/Superpower Template

New Feature Addition · Articles & templates · Created by MistyShadowsXX

Pretty self-explanatory. A superpower/power template. The spell template doesn't come anywhere close to a substitute, and none of the other templates even remotely fit.

Follow up

Some people are suggesting to use the spell template, and as I have already explained, it comes nowhere even close. All of the fields are very specifically geared towards spells, and spells only, and trying to write an article about, say, Pyrokinesis, would be very very difficult using that template.   For now I've settled on using the condition template but it's still very much geared towards diseases.   A superpower template would need fields geared towards how the power works, its limitations, how a person could acquire said power, etc. If these fields were to be added onto the existing conditions template, for example, then probably a selection where you can select whether this is a power or disease or whatever. That's just off the top of my head, but there's probably more fields that this would need. I agree that this should probably be done via adding to an existing template and not creating an entirely new one.   I'm just adding this follow-up for clarification to some of the questions some people had.   TL;DR: Once again, the spell template does, in fact, suck, and we should probably add these fields onto the existing conditions template.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We won't add a new template for superpowers, but we're definitely open to improving existing templates and we'll be discussing internally how to improve the Spell template.   In the future, to suggest an improvement, please create a suggestion with the specific improvements you want to see instead of being generic in your description. Additionally, please be constructive in your criticism; saying that something we've built for you "sucks" doesn't help and is not appreciated.

I'd prefer to see the Spell template altered to better accommodate superpowers than see an entire new template.

The Spell template is meant for this. A better suggestion would be for ways to make that template more applicable to other genres.

"Spell: Magical incantations, rituals, Psionics, Superpowers!"   The spell template is meant for superpowers, if you feel it doesn't suffice, a better idea would be suggestions addressing exactly what you feel needs to be added to properly support them.

I don't think more templates is the way to go, we already have 26. The spell template should be improved upon.

I agree with the submitter. While I don't do any work with superpowers, I do think this template should be added for others who do needed. I can see how the Spell Template doesn't function well for this use.

I can see why spell or condition do not really fit. Spell is geared too much towards (medieval) fantasy, and condition is too focused on what is detrimental to one's health. A more general and positive "superpower" does sound useful.

This would be so helpful: currently I used a combination of spell and condition templates, and it really doesn't cut it!

Personally I think the Spell template looks fine, but I haven't tried using it this way so maybe there's something I'm overlooking. It might help if you explained what sort of things the template is missing that you would want added (be it to the Spell template or to a new (Super)power template). Kind of hard to implement a feature if you don't explain what is wrong with the current one.

I probably would use the condition template, but I understand how it doesn't seem to fit for this usecase.

What about the condition's template ? I think the spell one is ok - or maybe it needs a few more sections (such as owner maybe? skill? type of power? You can ask any, really) - but if it doesn't fit your needs, maybe the condition one does?
