Map Pins Auto-Adjust with Updated Image

map pins

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Recently I upgraded my continent map image from 4K to 8K because some of the text on the smaller features was illegible. However, I had already created hundreds of invisible pins over landmarks (on one layer) and the settlements (in a separate layer). None of these are in the corresponding correct locations anymore, and I would like to suggest that there be an option when upgrading a map image to auto-correct the location of the map markers. Maybe by making their positions relative to the size of the map rather than absolute?

How does this feature request address the current situation?

When a lot of work has already been put in on a map, one is faced with the choice of either getting a better quality image or redoing all of the work with one's markers. I believe this issue might be holding people back from making the adjustments they need to.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The Team's Response

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. We understand the painpoint, but unfortunately this isn't an option within the scope of the map feature we have. Calculating the scaling of pins when the image size changes would require very complicated calculations (especially if it has a different aspect ratio). That said, we have planned many updates to the maps system that will make the whole experience easier.

This is one of those things I would rarely use but I completely understand that it would be very nice to have if you did need it. Regarding the general case, where aspect ratios differ or you are extending the map, you could do that too. All that should be needed is for the person updating the map to specify the co-ordinates of the bottom left and top right of the old map on the new map - so just drop a couple "commissioning" pins to do that - that gives you the translation and scaling factors you need to remap the pins. In the case of the original poster, they'd be at the bottom left and top right of the new map, but in the case of map extensions, they could be somewhere else. Sounds OK. Mind you it is not me that would be coding it :-)

Yes please. It would be real nice to be able to say 'please upscale all my markers' when you upload a resized version. (Ideally also the ability to move, in case you're expanding a map in one direction, but I'm not sure what would be a good GUI for that kinda thing.)

When you have around a 100 markers on your map, upgrading map resolution is no longer an option for a sane person
