Easier Sheets & Blocks Creation

User Interface (UI) / User Experience (UX) · Statblocks template creator (studio) · Created by Colonel 101

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

After trying to create Character Sheets & Stat Blocks for an RPG for the first time, I found it was quite difficult having to rely on values to define the dimensions of the sheets. Also, it appears that the use or JSON / CSS a nightmare for anyone who hasn't programmed in any shape or form. It seems to require learning skills that not everyone can so readily pick up even if they have the time.  It appears that others may have the same problem too.   Could be done on a blank 'page' similar to the whiteboards. From there it's a matter of having blocks similar to a spread sheet and entering what you want where you want, and then expanding or contracting the relevant blocks accordingly. Also, have the option at the end of the 'page' if you want to add any CSS or the like if you want.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would help with new beginners, or those who have to rely on learning skills they will only use in specific circumstances. Another point would be having to ask others (including paying someone) to do the sheets etc for them.   In some instances, it might also help with attracting other gamers to draw up sheets & stat blocks for popular games other than D&D 5e, Pathfinder, and the like into games. Or actually want to play alternative games.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It could potentially be applied to other templates in a few instances to specifically modify them to the game system being run.

The Team's Response

A sheet creator for simple statblocks is in the future pipeline indeed, but sheets are not simple things and the moment that calculations of any kind come into the equation things become complicated and yes require some level of mathematics/computing.   These equations tend to be part of 99% of the TTRPG systems out there and this is the reason that nobody so far (including all major VTTs never even tried to do create a system of the sort. In fact most of them are more complicated than World Anvil and require much more advanced coding knowledge.   For the time being...

If you need a sheet to be created you can also make a feature request for that sheet here

... so people with the technical knowledge to achieve this can do it for you.

If there was a way to add a checkbox feature for abilities that can only be used a limited amount of time, this would help immensely in bringing in some of my more hesitant players who rely on dndbeyond which doesnt have the option to add homebrew content as easily as worldanvil.

Adding a point because I'd love this. Sadly, making a good UI for anything but the most simple sheet creation would be extremely difficult. I recommend the WA Discord server for help. If you know HTML, you can get far with Bootstrap classes instead of learning css.

The difficulty in making a sheet has prevented me from using one with my players. I think it will be very useful to users that play in non very widespread RPGs or in custom systems.

Yes I very much agree. I can understandably assume it's much harder for the programers to make it easy, but ease of use would bring increased generic userbase. Not knowing how to code turns off many people.

I have no coding experience. Unfortunately I do not have the time to learn. Easier blocks and sheets would make the next steps in my game creation so much easier.

I fully agree with this! I use World anvil for my world wiki, GM notes, planning, everything except character sheets for this exact reason! I would love to get everything onto one platform as was my initial goal with moving to this platform.

I really like the point of asking/paying someone to make the sheets. I'd love to see this option as I can't afford to pay for the membership necessary to do it, just for one sheet design.

Yes! Thousand times yes! I have zero skills with JSON, and I barely understand CSS (mainly just copy-paste stuff I've seen others use or design). Being able to create statblocks or character sheets that fit your created RPG without having to learn days or months worth of JSON or CSS before starting would really be inclusive toward those who have zero understanding. It would also help those who are about to start a campaign (like a few days) and want a different look to their statblocks and character sheets without having to scramble and learn something new in time.

I agree that the current system is a nightmare for amateurs. I have almost no coding experience, so trying to figure out the current system completely killed my desire to create a homebrew RPG.
