Capricornus

Baron of Steam (a.k.a. Capricornus)

A mysterious figure that arose from anonymity as a lowly apprentice with no family and no name of his own Capricornus rose to great fame in his presumed short life of 30 years in the Kingdom of Apreau. By the age of 15 he made a name for himself as an ingenious engineer and inventor. Everyday it seemed he was creating something new. Then at the age of 20 his penultimate achievement, steam magic. By a complex magical sealing technique he was able to bind elemental spirits of fire and water to crystals that created steam. at the time much of technology ran on coal and used steam as the basis of day to day transport, trains, shipping. The problem was that coal was running out quickly, far faster than the industrial growth of the kingdom of Apreau and it certainly chafed against the strain.   Enter Capricornus with his new magical means of power they had a near endless supply. The only problem being Capricornus' nature. He cared for knowledge and nothing else. He coveted it, hoarded it. to the point that little else mattered to him in life. So with his new found wealth from being the baron of Steam he spent the next five years of his life constructing a grand library in Apreau's capital, Haven's Respite. Upon completion of the library he all but locked himself away inside barely making appearances outside and only when needed to gain more knowledge. The Great Library of Capricornus in and of itself was also a marvel of engineering with large rose stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings very much in line with the Gothic style architecture of the kingdom of Apreau.   For all the grandness Capricornus had he failed to see the forest from the trees and this is what seems to have led to his untimely demise. While engineers, inventors and scholars could emulate the work of Capricornus to keep machines running they could not make more without the key components of his designs. But those were locked tightly behind the doors of his library. As a result of this the leaders of Apreau at the time chose to sack the library. Laying siege to it in order to gain access to wealth of knowledge it held.   The siege happened in the first month of the year 1500 AOS. For all the hustle, bustle and dramatics it ended as quickly as it began. Capricornus himself stepped outside of his library cursed the kingdom of Apreau saying it had brought down its own demise for its greed and vanished into thin air with his library as well. How such a feat was accomplished no one knows for certain. Some alleged first hand accounts say that two Pale Ravens descended from the sky and he was whisked away with them and the library disappeared right after. Others say he simply vanished in a puff of smoke.   What is known is that the kingdom of Apreau certainly met with its end in a cataclysmic event that shook the foundations of the world. The kingdom became a shattered husk of its former self not 5 months later on the same day of the month that Capricornus disappeared. the epicenter of industrial technology lost and its source as well things seemed grim for the world. But other nations weathered the storm, picked up the pieces, held on to what technology they could and moved on.   Much to people's surprise an expedition ten years later into the wasteland that was once Haven's Respite some of Capricornus' notes on steam magic were found and from these the technology was revitalized. With not all hope lost the people of Zodia Accapia live out their lives as best they can.
