The Blazing Maw

To the southwest of the Nerenzah Mountains, on an island a few miles off the coast of Southern Kantrinna lies the towering volcano known as The Blazing Maw. It is effectively unreachable by boat thanks to the rough waters and sharp rocks that jut out of the water like the maw of a sea serpent. At its base is hard, cracked ground covered with cinders and jagged rock. Soot-colored clouds darken the sky above the mountain, and they glow with occasional flashes of red lightning, visible from the nearby towns. By night, this dim red light glows from the smoldering mountain top. A glowing river of molten lava moves sluggishly down a slope and out of sight. The Blazing Maw Volcano rises about 6,500 feet high at its summit. It is nearly impossible to scale and no one in recorded history has been foolhardy enough to make an attempt. With the wind, smoke, and heat, flying there would be equally difficult. Smoking vents are everywhere in the island valley at the base of the volcano, and some of these holes spurt out jets of flame from time to time. Few have ever dared venture near the volcano, if anyone had found a way inside, there have been none that have returned to tell the tale. There are a handful of volcanoes in the south where rumor has it that the great Dragon of Fire has made his lair, and though the Blazing Maw is among these, no entrance has ever been found.
