13 - The Legacy of Toben
General Summary
With their fight night victory behind them, the crew sets off for Rumbleshack, a town in the Shallows where the sisters will meet an old vessel to prepare for their voyage into the southern continent. On their first day, they encounter Awha the Storm Giant atop his massive mount, which carries his ship and an entire portion of Stormcrest. He tells them he intends to visit his brother Kohatu for the first time in over two centuries, claiming "if he is to die, I may as well attend his funeral." The party reassures him that Kohatu is on the road to recovery. He thanks them for the information and says to keep whatever treasure was stolen from his treasury - he had been spending the last few days destroying vessels of the Deep King's navy, and demonstrates by throwing a lightning bolt through the sky, summoning a brief storm cloud.
The entire northeast corner of Stormcrest rests upon its back.
Gem spends the evening communing her pendant, this time seeing five motes of light - the silver one belonging to the druid, Toben's verdant light, one blue light, one golden light, and another silver light. This time she speaks to Toben, summoning his spirit forward. She asks him questions of his death and his history. Toben explains that he once traveled the seas with Snapdragon, his sisters and a few others. Snapdragon had convinced him to take on the seafaring life after he had gained his Paragon blessing from Ranginui, and after admiring the captain for so long he couldn't refuse. The crew journeyed the northern waters for the better part of a year, tackling daring adventure after adventure, until disaster struck. A mighty storm threatened to capsize their vessel, and Snapdragon told Toben to attempt to quell the storm with his Auri magic. He tried, summoning a mighty wind that worked to push away the storm clouds, but in his efforts Ylva was thrown overboard into the raging seas. They were barely able to recover her, and since that event Ylva had fallen mostly silent.
Downtrodden with guilt, Toben punished himself by refusing to sail any longer, isolating himself in their hometown of Blusterbough. Snapdragon did his best to convince him otherwise, and after many heated arguments the two had a falling out. Toben asked Gem to offer his apologies one last time to his sisters, and requested to speak to the Auri Paragon in her company.
"Just...offer my apologies to them one last time. To add on to the thousand before." - Toben, to Gem'iniThe next day, the party encounters a curious vessel helmed by Humdrim, a collector of strange trinkets with a sizable crew of monkeys. The party barters for three of his trinkets, trading Gnash's Nets jacket and passing it off as a collectable. That evening, Kalani meditates over the pendant with Gem's permission. He enters and meets with Toben, who recognizes him as the Auri Paragon. Toben offers to pass down to him a technique he has honed for three years, an improvement over the Auri Technique Wind Slice. Kalani is shown a vision of a tall hill and assumes the training, but is heavily wounded in the process. He snaps back to the ship's room and nurses his injuries with Ylva and Gem's help. They arrive at Blusterbough the next day. Gem and Kalani journey to the hill Toben revealed in his vision. Kalani tries again, focusing on the pendant. With a concentrated effort and Toben's guidance, he is bestowed the mastery over Toben's technique and years of memories revealing diligent practice. The party leaves Blusterbough at noon and arrives on the shores of Rumbleshack. They enter a packed tavern called the Sand Bar and locate Snaggletooth, who welcomes the familiar faces of the sisters. As Ylva and Isgrid depart towards the shipyard, a tavern patron recognizes the weapon on Dhumkk'd's back as Captain Greivous Gnash's former weapon. The tavern falls silent in shock, then quickly turns to anger as their allegiance to the Deep King's fleet is revealed.
