06 - Battleships and Bosuns

General Summary

The party rest for the evening before their departure. Gem spends the remaining daylight with Ylva, learning Aquan from the quiet sailor. There's an attempt to decipher the scales gifted to Gem, with no luck. Mender trains with a straw training dummy and has a brief conversation with Isgrid, both detailing their motivations for the journey. Kalani learns how to wash dishes with Elbert and shares his reservations about his next steps, to which Elbert responds he's doing just fine thus far. Dhumkk'd spends the evening asleep, as he does.

"We've all kind of accepted this world was a completely different place three hundred years ago. Even now, we're all still picking up the pieces. Your path is as right as anyone else's."

In the morning, Isgrid and Ylva send their brother's body to sea, his casket and rowboat set aflame and returned to the ocean. With a heavy heart the party and the sisters leave Blusterbough towards the Bay of Kiwa. Kalani learns to read the compass globe from Ylva, who mentions that only elite vessels typically have one to navigate according to the Isle of Veil's elemental waypoint.

"Every book I've read says the compass globe always points to the Isle, whether it can be found or not...no book has ever mentioned four separate lights."

Gem resumes her Aquan learning with Ylva, to which the sailor comments she's picking up on it rather quickly. The first day of their journey is interrupted by a black-sailed vessel helmed by Captain Grizzgaft, a lackey in the Deep King's ranks. Isgrid says that the Deep King's territory should be many miles eastward, but Grizzgaft says his domain has expanded in the wake of the Bay of Kiwa navy's recent retreat. Armed with a new boat and a new crew, Grizzgaft demands the supplies of the party's boat.
Kalani retorts with a scathing insult, sending Grizzgaft into a blind fury. A battle ensues - half the party leaps to the other vessel, bolstered by Ylva's support, while the rest rain cover fire in the safety of Isgrid's arcane shroud. Dhumkk'd in particular makes quick work out of First Mate Wendell and a handful of Bosuns, while Kalani and Mender throw two bosuns overboard. Gem lands the final blow on Captain Grizzgaft, but Ylva stabilizes him; Isgrid mentions he'd fetch a small bounty and offer some useful info in the Bay of Kiwa, and she'd rather not kill if she could help it.

"Sorry, I've...had my fair share of death for one day."

The party loot the pirates and their ship, gaining a fair bit of weapons and armor. Below deck Mender finds spices and two potions that no one could identify. Kalani spots a silver cloak identified by Mender as the Cloak of Billowing, to which Kalani immediately dons. Dhumkk'd finds rotten oranges, to which Mender purifies them for safe eating.
With no desire to claim Grizzgaft's vessel, the party take their prisoners and continue on northwards. After another full day's travel, from the crow's nest Ylva spots land, as just over the horizon the Bay of Kiwa comes into view.
