Royalty

Royal titles are titles belonging to the Royal Family, specifically the monarch and those of the primary line. Members of lesser lines of the royal house do not inherit royal titles, but often possess noble titles either in their own right or through marriage.

Upper Nobility

The upper nobility consists of the high-ranking nobles who enjoy immediacy and are given the power to create and bestow lower noble titles and raise those within their realm to nobility. All upper nobles also retain the Right of Taxation which allows them to implement taxes and the Right of Jurisdiction, which allows them to make laws so long as the law does not contradict Royal Law.

Middle Nobility

Like the upper nobility, the middle nobility enjoys immediacy, and may or may not have lower nobles as vassals. While the middle nobility can bestow subsidiary titles, they may not create titles nor can they raise someone to nobility. All middle nobles retain the Right of Taxation which allows them to implement taxes.

Lower Nobility

The lower nobility are titled nobles, usually the vassals of a middle or upper noble though a few do have immediacy. They cannot have any titled vasals below them but may be the liege of landed knights or mayors. Lower nobles have few sovereign rights, they can judge cases and determine punishments but not create laws, they can collect taxes but not levy them. For lower nobles, their income primarily comes from people working on land and businesses they own, they can only receive income from the land and businesses of freemen if their liege lord implements a tax that goes to them, a tax which lasts only as long as their liege wills it.

Primary Line

The Primary line descends from a titled noble, any child of a titled noble is part of their primary line, however the primary line is only continued through the eldest child. The second son of a first son would be part of the primary line, but would not pass it on, whereas their older sibling would pass the primacy on to all of their children. Succession for noble titles is an agnatic preference primogeniture, meaning that the eldest child inherits the title, with male children being higher in the line of succession than females.

Immediacy

Immediacy means that a person's liege lord is the King, and there are no nobles in between them.

The highest-ranking noble title is that of a Grand Duke, who governs an expansive territory, often surpassing that of any other nobility. Presently, the sole remaining grand duchy is the Grand Duchy of Kearmer. Alongside the significant size of their domain, Grand Dukes may enjoy certain tax exemptions. Among the unique privileges exclusive to Grand Dukes is the Right of Territorial Sovereignty. This grants them the authority to enact laws within their realm, as long as such laws do not contradict Royal Laws. As prominent members of the upper nobility, Grand Dukes also possess the Right of Investiture, enabling them to establish new titles within their territory and bestow them upon individuals of their choosing. Grand Dukes are styled as "Their Most Serene Highness"

Großfürst(in) - Grand Prince(ss)

A Grand Prince governs a territory roughly equivalent to a standard duchy, occasionally slightly larger. Similar to lesser princes, Grand Princes possess the Right of Coinage, granting them the authority to mint their own coins. Additionally, they share the Right of Investiture with Grand Dukes, enabling them to create new titles within their realm. However, what sets Grand Princes apart is their exclusive Right of Diplomatic Autonomy. This privilege grants them the ability to engage in treaties and agreements with foreign governments without necessitating the approval of the Crown. Grand Princes are styled "Their Serene Highness"

Middle Nobility

Herzog(in) - Duke/Duchess

A duke is a noble with a sizable territory and several vassals under them. They are styled as Illustrious Highness or Grace.

Fürst(in) - Prince(ss)

The ruler of a principality, a Sovereign Prince usually has a few vassals under them and is granted the Right of Coinage. They are styled as Illustrious Highness.

Markgraf(in) - Margrave/Margravine

A Margrave rules over territory near a border, and it is their job to defend it and thus are expected to have a larger army but in return pay lower taxes. In addition, Margraves are granted the Right of Conscription which allows them to levy not just their own troops and call up the full levy of those under them, but also to levy the forces of any neighboring Burgrave in times of war. Margraves usually have 2-3 barons under them. They are styled as

Burgraf(in) - Burgrave/Burgravine

A Burgrave is a count who has immediacy. Most burgraves have landed knights and mayors under them, and they tend not to have any titled vassals. There are exceptions to this rule, for example, a wealthy Burgrave might build a castle and petition the king to raise a local noble to be a Baron under them, or an influential one might arrange for a vassal to be transferred to them.

A count is the ruler of a county and functions as a powerful vassal, and generally has landed knights and/or mayors under them.

A baron rules a castle or a city, usually one that brings in enough money for them to have a landed knight or two under them

Herr/Frau - Lord/Lady

The lowest title of nobility, a lord rules over a keep or town, but unlike a baron their fief generally is not large enough or valuable enough for them to be able to support a landed knight.
