Spirit Soulshroom

In, and only in, the The Under Realm grows a very rare mushroom. It is called a Spirit Soulshroom. It is a very special fungus with some very rare qualities. Many spore druids use this mushroom in their studies and powers. It has immense primal energy housed inside it and it can be used in spells, creation of some types of magical items, a key ingredient in some potions, etc. It is primarily known but its taller height and the glow it lets off. When it is found it is very hard to miss.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The overall structure of the mushroom is very similar to of most fungi. It has the long stalk with a round circular crown on top. It does contain small pieces hanging from the edges of the crown. Color wise it is usually a bioluminescent combination of orange, purple, and red. Most times the purple is on top and the orange and red mix and match on the underside and stalk below.

Genetics and Reproduction

These usually reproduce via spores. Spores form on the underside of the crown and will spread around at a certain point. They detach from the main Soulshroom and will travel via wind, animals, people, etc.

Growth Rate & Stages

A full grown Spirit Soulshroom takes anywhere from 5-10 years to reach full maturity. During that time they grow incredibly slowly staying rather small. Near the the point right before they reach maturity they will undergo a massive growth spurt growing as much as a full inch every day. After maturity the mushroom will continue to grow at a slower rate for the rest of its life. If left alone a Spirit Soulshroom could be as large as a tree. However in recent years none has been found this large, or been left alone to attain that height.

Ecology and Habitats

The optimal environment for the Soulshroom is a very dark habitat. This is why they are only found in places like the Under Realm and similar locations. A very small amount of light can be too much and the mushroom will wither and die. They need very little water, especially to get started. They have extensive roots that will find just enough water to keep going. Many have tried to grow them in similar habitats above ground but with very little success.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The primary use of Spirit Soulshrooms is in a wide variety of potions. They are a key binding ingredient for making potions with magical effects, or even just better effects. They are able to make more potent healing potions, and the same can be said for poisons. They are also crucial in creating potions that mimic magical effects for a short duration. This is why they come into such high demand, and have a bit of protection around them. Recent studies on them has also indicated some kind of connection between the other Soulshrooms. Nothing is known for sure however those who study magical effects in nature are quite intrigued.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Within Zhen Gho they are primarily found in the Under Realm in a plentiful manner. However there are other places that are just as dark and devoid of life that they are able to grow. Nothing near what can be found below however it has been cause to reevaluate ways in which to grow them elsewhere.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

They will form a symbiotic relationship with other fungi. In all cases where Soulshrooms are harvested other different kinds of mushrooms are growing below and around them. Their color and size tend to ward off potential predators and other fauna from interfering in their growth.

I can see why those studying them would be intrigued. It is interesting that they protect other things around them.
