Darringtium Sickness

Where things begin to glow

Henrick was in my office almost like clockwork, every two to three weeks he comes in complaining of a cough and sore throat. Though he seems to have broken that this month. I should make a note to send my joy we found something that works.
— Excerpt of a Wave 38 Doctor's notes
I am starting to understand why my father may have vanished. I am most certain it is due to the ore. Side note, I should put in safety protocol for the workers.
— Excerpt from a journal of Lucretia Darrington

A rare and rather hidden sickness it will always be first diagnosed in the hidden writings of Lucretia Darrington. Not wanting to panic the known world with something that seemed rather benign, Lucretia wrote about it cryptically and often only in passing in a few journals and various works that supposedly no one has ever seen. Though it is often calling Darring Cough as it is mostly seen in those who work closely with Darringtinium Ore.

Symptoms

Bare Skin Contact

The only known or documented case was Lucretia Darrington, and even then most of this is not known to the world.
  • Stage One: Prolong contact the skin begins to take on a magenta hue.
  • Stage Two: The affected area, generally the fingertips, will turn a deeper hue of magenta and the discoloration will spread farther.
  • Stage Three: The magenta hue begins to consume the person's hands. Either early on or between Stage Two and Three the hands often develop tremors, starting out rather light to progressing through the later stages and being rather predominate.
  • Stage Four: The magenta hue has traveled about halfway up the person's forearms and they now glow a faint magenta hue.
  • Final Stage: The color and glow begin to inch past the elbow. Hand tremors are more like a near constant shaking.

Ingestion

While none of this information has been known or studied these are the stages of ingesting Darringtinium Ore, ore flecks, or ore dust.
  • Stage One: Constant clearing of the throat, feeling like something is caught in the throat, sometimes coughing fits to where they cannot seem to catch their breath.
  • Stage Two: Sore throat, inflamed tonsils, tender gums, runny nose, itchy eyes to say the least a lot of the times it is diagnosed as allergies, cold, or flu. These symptoms are present through the other stages.
  • Stage Three: Not visible but the lining of the lungs begins to turn a light magenta.
  • Stage Four: Linning of the lungs is fully magenta and a dim glow, both readily unnoticeable from the outside.

Prevention
Lady Darrington was rather adamant about heavy work gloves, nose and throat coverings, and eye protection for those who work with or around any ore.

Affected Groups
  • Miners
  • Ore Transporters
  • Smelters
  • Beasts
  • Prinals

Treatment
It is unknown at this time as if there is anything to be done about it. Very little research has been put into it and what has either vanished or now the industry is where it's a low chance or really catching the sickness.

Prognosis
Bare Skin Contact: Grim, as the writings of Lady Darrington noted it was hard on her mind to begin losing the ability to write her findings as harsh as they were on her body.

Ingestion: Grim, constant coughing leads to other health and wellness complications.

Overall: The ending outcome is all the same. The person vanishes without a trace.
