Laezocian

Culture

Culture and cultural heritage

Laezocian culture is quite pacifistic. Most people are indifferent to soldiers, although some look down upon them.   People in professions that take them outside of city walls such as farmers, travelling merchants, and couriers are generally very well-respected, and are often considerably wealthier than in other places. This is because in Laezocia, the population of monsters has been increasing in recent years, especially closer to the borders.   Magic and alchemy are hated.   Laezocians are friendlier to draconians than most other people. Draconians in Laezocia are typically only met with mild disdain, or occasionally indifference.

Common Etiquette rules

Politeness is important to Laezocians. Profanity is uncommon in public, especially among nobility. Personal insults are often taken more seriously than in many other cultures.

Common Dress code

Clothing decoration is common, even if it impacts practicality. Among nobility, practicality sometimes seems to be a secondary concern. Bright colors in clothing are not uncommon. It is generally expected for a person to at least know how to maintain and repair their own clothing, and it is not uncommon for people to make their own clothing.

Art & Architecture

Common buildings are typically made of wood, and more expensive buildings are often made of stone. Almost every Laezocian settlement has walls, even small villages. Farms typically have at least a small palisade, and isolated farms are very rare.   Various forms of art are quite popular in Laezocia. The most popular forms of art are painting, plays, and poetry. Tailoring is also typically considered art, and is quite popular. Most poets and playwrights tend to be women, and most tailors and painters tend to be men.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Laezocian funerals are typically burials. Individuals are typically buried separately. Most corpses are simply buried in a cemetery, but some wealthy families have crypts. Bodies buried normally typically have a small stone monument atop the grave, and bodies in crypts typically have a plaque on the wall above the coffin.

Common Taboos

People who carry weapons in public are generally met with disdain or fear. Owning a weapon is typically only considered acceptable for soldiers, law enforcement, hunters, and farmers in dangerous areas. In remote villages, some weapons are typically considered somewhat acceptable.   Alchemy is generally hated, but most people begrudgingly accept medicine, as long as there is no magical component.   The most taboo thing among Laezocians is practicing magic, regardless of what it is being used for. Most people would rather die than be healed with a spell.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Makeup is common among both men and women, although excessive amounts are considered unseemly.

Gender Ideals

Laezocian culture is somewhat patriarchal. Among nobility, women can only inherit if there is no male heir. There are no legal restrictions on the nomination of a female member of the royal family for succession, but it usually doesn't happen.

Courtship Ideals

In Laezocia, courtship is generally initiated by a man. Usually, this is done by inviting a woman to spend time in a public place, usually one that costs money such as a theater or restaurant. Typically, the man is expected to pay for all expenses incurred during these outings. This is typically repeated two or three times over a short span of time, and then the potential couple either stays together or separates. If they stay together, marriage usually happens within one to three years. Marriage proposals are typically made by men, and are generally accompanied with a gift, usually an expensive piece of clothing.

Relationship Ideals

Relationships are typically monogamous. Married men are typically expected to be the sole provider for their families. Divorce is possible, but often looked upon with disdain, especially if the couple getting divorced has children.
