2014 - 10/15 - Taran's Journal

General Summary

Mayor Deverin sent some people down into the caverns yesterday to follow the rumors about Black Fang. They hadn’t come back by the end of the day, so she decided it was time to send a back-up party. If I didn’t owe her so much, I never would have agreed to this. Her choices for this rescue mission are crazy! Elivira is a decent enough elf, but I’m never quite sure what she’s going to do. Kotri isn’t much better.

Once we got to the entrance, there was a huge centipede. Easy enough to kill, but my party thought the legs looked tasty. Right. I think they carried off more legs than we’ll ever be able to steam and I suspect they taste more like ash than lobster.

We found signs of the other party in the next room. The chest had been broken into and was empty, the bedrolls were messed up. Elivira found some things buried underneath, but there wasn’t much to find. The fountain in the next room was really interesting and obviously magical. The girls found curing potions under the lip, but none of us were brave enough to try the water.

There was a big fire trap in the next room which Elivira triggered but avoided. Both Kotri and I got hit, but the dwarf is sturdier than I am, I guess. I went down and they had to bring me back with a potion. Embarrassing to say the least. Of course, as soon as I was up again, a little bitty fire elemental tried to jump us and we had to swat it back down. Easily the smallest I’ve ever read about and, weirdly, it turned into a magical stone when it died. The girls gave it to me for safe-keeping.

Beyond the fire trap, there was a chamber full of spiderwebs and the dead carcass of a giant spider near a dead goblin. I assume this is more evidence that our forerunners survived up until this point, at least. We found some more gold and a wand of Magic Missile, which should come in handy.

The next corridor proved most interesting to an academic like me: a huge stone pillar covered in runes! It turned out to be a magic obelisk for granting water-breathing. We all received its arcane blessing and headed on to the next flooded chamber. I must admit to having been a little over-eager with the swimming and got half-way across before I realized the danger: immature reefclaws! There were three and in my panic, I was unable to swim back to safety. Kotri helped protect me while Elivira fired at them from shore. Eventually, we subdued two of them and Kotri managed to charm the third into obedience. They named him “George” and he seems intent on following us from here on out. Elivira located 10 enchanted arrows on the island.

After leaving George’s home, we came upon the rest of the party, apparently resting for the night in the throne room of a self-styled goblin king. No one woke up when we arrived, so I suppose we’ll rest and wait for them before continuing on. I’m eager to hear their story, since I never would have guessed that a goblin would offer respite for a group of civilized adventurers. But I never would have guessed you could charm a reefclaw, either.
