Nalyn's Garden

For as long as living memory can tell, the bodies of children who die before, during, or shortly after childbirth have been encased in "eggshells" created by stone mages. These stone caskets are made in two halves which can be fastened together securely. These are then buried with all but a portion of the eggshell underground, leaving a small mound of enchanted stone facing upward toward the heavens.   In Shazun, several wealthy merchants decided to create a special garden for these eggs. In addition, arrangements were made that they too would be buried in (much larger) "eggshells" when they died rather than in the burial mounds normally used. Burial in this cemetery, for those who can afford the expense, is considered an honor. Burial of infants in this cemetery is free of charge.

Architecture

The grounds of this site are surrounded by a 3 foot (1m) high palisade wall which acts as a fence. It is not meant to keep creatures out, but to mark a boundary between the garden and the area outside of it. There is a large opening containing two iron-worked gates that are the same height as the fence. Each gate door is supported by an 8 foot (2.5m) wooden post that is 1 foot (30cm) in diameter. One of these is carved with Seluri's symbol and carvings of flowers spiral around it from the ground to the top. The other is carved with Rychul's symbol and carvings of footprints spiral around it from the ground to the top.

Layout

On the opposite side of the grounds from the gate is an arch made of some kind of yellow stone with Nalyn's symbol engraved at the apex. Two more arches complete a "square" with the gate, the one to the left from the gate made of red stone and bearing Drozhi's symbol and the one to the right bearing Kusif's symbol. The arches represent the passage of the dead into one of these three afterlifes.   The ground is flat within the fence. Scattered across the ground, the curved edges of stones rise from the ground, like smooth icebergs floating in a sea of grass and flowers.
