12.29 - A Clockwork Conspiracy, Ch. 6: Explosive Solutions

General Summary

Sig's fortified closet-lab gets blasted across town from the Library's explosion and lands in the inferno of Barksdale's garrison. He manages to get some surviving guardsmen to help him offload some armaments he's been working on before his lab goes up in flames, and they run into a beleaguered Riven, Eliana, and Pim as the latter find themselves trapped in vicious nets before a small army of dozens of clockwork cyborgs, horrors, and a small robotic kraken. While unused to gunpowder weapons, Sig's newly formed commando squad manages to wreck havoc on most of the Hapaestus henchmen before the pitched battle even commences, and the heroes make short work of the remaining foes, deftly avoiding the worst of the cyborg's explosive death blasts and utlizing some of them as improvized human grenades against some of the larger enemies. The kraken, however, after taking what appears to be snapshots of the scene with its photographic eyes, sinks beneath the solid ground and vanishes from combat. In the aftermath of the explosive battle, once the dust of demolished buildings and gunpowder ash had settled, Riven floats up above the rooftops on their celestial wings to assess the state of the conflict--and sees southward the reason why the Ogre Gate had been flung wide, unguarded, as a large, well-armed force bearing the flags of Hapaestus appears in the distance in the light of a blood-red dawn.
