12.21 - The Second Battle of Last Rest, Pt. 2
General Summary
The Balor appears before the skiff, fire and shadow washing over the heroes assembled on its deck. Out of nowhere, Sand-Fury the Wyvern appears, carrying Domokos and Riven out of harm's way before maneuvering close enough for Riven to get off a divine strike against the demonic foe. However, the Wyvern is struck down by the Balor's blade in passing, it and its riders saved from certain death only by Robin's feather fall spell. Grunk steps up to the plate, pouring all of his years of meditation and self-discovery into a single knockout uppercut that stuns the Balor, and Sig, thinking fast, blasts the Balor with warp magic using his arcane gun right before the skiff crashes into it.
From a fairy portal above the battle, Eliana makes her entrance, driving the Blackrazor into the Balor's skull with a mighty blow. Robin, with masterful piloting skills honed in the Astral Sea, flips the skiff around and charges the falling Balor, allowing Hazel to hit it with a barrage of druidic water, Bronwen to get off a devastating shot with her Tesseract Glove, and Elfriede to draw upon the ancient scroll from the Ruined City as he casts Finger of Death on the demon. With one final strike with the Blackrazor, Eliana ends the demon and destroys its soul, its fiery death throes barely scratching her as Robin easily picks her up and turns the skiff back to the ground--and the aftermath of the invasion.
The walls and gates of the town lie intact, Draegloth slain upon the ramparts by the brave guardsmen and remaining heroes on the ground. To the south, the Church of Ilmater lies in ruins, dozens of dead townsfolk scattered among its stones. This is where the heroes find Matthias's body, burned and broken nearly beyond recognition; Hazel preserves what she can with her druid art, and the skiff heads back to town, some to the Sanctuary, some to the Council chambers to deliberate on events, some to simply nurse their wounds and decide what is next for them.
For Elfriede, it will mean cloistering himself in his study to sort out the dark visions granted to him by the metallic dragon soul residing in his mind.
For Bronwen, it will mean spending time with her sons and reevaluating her priorities and she is looked to by her people to guide them into an uncertain future.
For Domokos, it will mean setting off astride Sand-Fury to seek out answers to what transpired here from a place he saw it last: the Greenskin Plains, and the conflict between goblin and orc.
And for Robin, it will mean reckoning with the certainty that it was his own blade, infused in his hubris with demonic blood, the brought this threat into their home.
