11.9 - Aberration Beneath the Tavern

General Summary

The members of the newly constructed guildhall of the Monsterary are confronted by a mob of disgruntled workers who demand payment; they manage to buy some time and do a side job for Liam to get an extension on their loan. Heading into the tavern’s basement, they encounter a swarm of psionic rats who mind control Grunk and turn him on his friends—however, they managed to defeat the swarm and earn the Mayor’s approval.
Later that day, with Grunk departing to meditate, the three remaining members of the Monsterary guild run into Eliana and Pim in the common room; Pim suddenly lurches forward, compelled by a mind control spell, towards the basement. Eliana races after her companion, the other heroes following quickly after. Pim uncovers a hidden tunnel in the basement wall, and the party races after him, running into giant, diseased rats they have to fight along the way. Eliana, using every toll mundane or magical to keep up with Pim, finally reaches the furthest gave, and comes face to face with a horrifying aberration that is controlling Pim with psionic power. After Pim nearly crushes Eliana to death, the party manages to convince him to fight the compulsion, which he eventually breaks and immediately flies at the brain creature that had puppeteered him, killing it with a single enraged blow. The party collects remnants of the dead aberration along with payment from the tavernskeeper, and Eliana studies the strange symbol burned into the flesh of the monster that was controlling her friend.
