11.5 - Corruption in the Darkwood

General Summary

When the Guild increased the reward for mapping the dangerous Flooded Forest to 250 silver, it was too good for the adventurers of Last Rest to refuse. The larger party of Bronwen, Matthias, Grunk, Shloopurr, Eliana, Ami, and Pim took the trodden road through the Old Battlefield and across the lands of the Belltower until they reached the southern edge of the Darkwood.
Venturing into the forest was a grueling trek, with Eliana and Pim catching Flood Fever almost immediately. However, they saved their cure disease potions and spells for when it counted: Ami led the charge in healing a sick Owlbear and her three cubs, with Eliana and Shloopurr quickly following suit. There they discovered the corpse and journal of the druid Za Duan, who perished in the swamp leaving behind a missing mysterious scroll and magical ax, Treebane.
The journey culminated with an epic battle against a disease-ridden Shambling Mound. Two MVPs of the battle emerged: Matthias deftly scaled the vines of the monster to misty step up and grab the mysterious scroll from a hanging vine. Then pulling out the scroll while falling, he used it to cast blight while falling in midair. The Owlbear that has been healed earlier came roaring back into battle, saving the downed/engulfed Ami from the Mound's clutches.
After pulling the lost Treebane from the body of the Shambling Mound, Matthias dealt it a final blow, clearing the forest of this foul evil and returning it to normal... Until his patron compelled him to touch two green crystals, releasing two imprisoned young green dragons into the reach.
