11.20 - The Red Dragon

General Summary

Grunk, Shloopurr, Ami, and Oktar accept a deal with Captain Barksdale to assist in the training of a militia to support the defense of the town, using the as-yet-unpaid-for dojo as a staging ground. Over the course of their training, the new recruits become surprisingly adept at a new form of martial arts, which they refer to as The Way of the Bugbear, and prove themselves a formidable fighting force when they are taken by the Monsterary into their first taste of battle--in combat with the Red Dragon from the volcanic mountain. At Shadowell, the heroes and their warrior monks fought valiantly against the legendary foe, losing over half their recruits to the dragon's fire, and Grunk suffering grievous wounds despite the impressive number of punches he landed in the dragon's side. Fortunately, reinforcements arrived in the nick of time in the form of the wizard Eldfride, the ranger Eliana, and her companion Pim, who were invaluable in bringing the dragon down, with Shloopurr at last dealing the final blow. As the fire left the dragon's raging eyes, so did the flames recede from the river of fire, and the scorched and battered party returned to the Last Rest to a hero's welcome--but also to the sound of distant drumbeats to the east.
