Chief Ranger Rank/Title in Yrnath | World Anvil

Chief Ranger

The title of Chief Ranger is held by the leader of the town of Hallowside, and is passed down through the generations to the one deemed most capable of leading the settlement and its Ranger Corps. Initially an honor held by decorated Rangers, the title evolved into what it is today thanks to the efforts of Vylkis of Hallowside, who wished to militarize the society to ward off perceived threats.

List of Chief Rangers

This section contains a list of all currently known Chief Rangers. Hallowside has instituted a system of aggressive historical revisionism since Cyrus took power, and as a result most of the records about Chief Rangers prior to Cyrus' father Garfield are missing, minus some notable exceptions.

Benedict Allard

The Allard family had over a dozen members to have earned the title of Chief Ranger, so when Benedict Allard earned the position, few were surprised. He oversaw the Ranger Corps during a rather tumultuous period, leading the Corps during the War of 46 Days and bearing witness to the ever-increasing threat posed by Oridove and his followers. As it looked increasingly like Oridove would call for violence against his own people, Benedict worked in secret with his siblings to develop a number of escape vectors, should fleeing the city be the only viable option. Benedict Allard would lose his life during the chaos of the Night of Red Leaves, dying to protect a fleeing family. His siblings would also pay the same price, all loyal to Hallowside and all its people until the very end.

Traellis of Hallowside

Traellis was the first Chief Ranger to hold the title following Vylkis' complete overhaul of the city and its culture. As the town was already fully isolated little happened under his command, but as rumors persisted that he had some arcane aptitude, it is possibly the last time that a Ranger of Hallowside, especially a Chief Ranger, had received a blessing of magical power from Arbos.

Garfield of Hallowside

Garfield was the father of Cyrus and Chief Ranger before him. Very little is known about his time as Chief Ranger, save for a small skirmish with bandits during a particularly rough winter. His youngest son, Cyrus, would succeed him in the role.

Cyrus of Hallowside

Cyrus earned the title of Chief Ranger through blood and betrayal, and it is only fitting that his time as Chief Ranger would be filled with lies and deceit. Cyrus was the first Chief Ranger to establish contact with the outside world, thanks to a sinister deal he made with an infernal patron in his youth. His eldest son, Abraham, would succeed him in the role.

Abraham of Hallowside

Abraham, the son of Cyrus, was one of the more progressive Chief Rangers. He had altered the process for selecting the next Chief Ranger, making it no longer hereditary to the eldest male child. Instead, he removed the requirement that the Chief Ranger must be male and mandated that the title should go to whichever child is the strongest. It would just so happen that his eldest son, Micah, would also be the strongest and succeed him in the role.

Micah of Hallowside

Micah, the son of Abraham, would continue his father's more progressive approach to the position. He would shorten the length of mandatory conscription to only five years, and would once again allow women to join the Ranger Corps. He had hoped that allowing women to join might help to root out much of the misogyny that was present within the town's culture, though these policies saw virtually no success to that end. His eldest son, Gideon, would succeed him in the role.

Gideon of Hallowside

Gideon, the son of Micah, was significantly more authoritarian than his father or grandfather. While he would not undo the changes of his predecessors, he would significantly overhaul the way the new generation was taught, hoping to better instill obedience into future Rangers. His eldest son, Jedediah, would succeed him in the role.

Jedediah of Hallowside

Jedediah, the current leader of Hallowside and son of Gideon, has doubled down on many of the worst policies from Gideon's time as Chief Ranger. Much like his father, Jedediah sought total obedience from all under his command, and even moreso from his children. His daughter Bailey was the presumptive heir to the position, however her disappearance in 7E 580 has significantly complicated matters.
