Kai Hinterfoot

A mostly harmless, carefree human who likes to pretend that she's a pirate, Kai has a heart of gold. Currently she is a member of Overgrowth, operating secretly as the kingdom's Spymaster. To those who view her from outside the council, she is a bit of a free-spirit, always going off on her own personal adventures, and almost always returning empty handed.

Personal history

When she lived in Eleder, she and her wealthy adoptive family helped to deliver shipments of spice across the sea. This life led to her falling in love with the ocean from an early age. Unfortunately for her, her parents also experimented with the alchemical creation of homunculi, a highly secretive activity, seeking to craft loyal servants which could support Eleder's military. This ultimately was their downfall: one of these flaskborn soldiers, a homunculus of her family's making, was seemingly a little too eager to do its job. When townsfolk began to go missing, it was convicted of mass murder.
Her family was held in contempt, and one of them was to partake in a duel to the death, as punishment. Kai forced her family to accept her for this duel. Kai stood in the arena, accepting her lot in life, but refusing to lose. Her opponent was a pirate captain who had previously attempted to plunder spices from one of her ships, and he was on death row. When she was victorious, she found that she could not end his life, and thus, she broke the laws of dueling. The guards dragged them both off, though even as she was being clasped in irons, the crowd cheered Kai's name, impressed with her flashy serpentine fighting style.
Vincent and Homily chose to earn her freedom by clearing her family of all suspicion, investigating who was the true serial killer plaguing her hometown. Eventually, they found and destroyed a tainted tablet which had been infecting Eleder's water sources. From this they learned of a peculiar disease that had been causing madness in its victims, driving them to end their own lives in hidden places where they believed no one would ever find them. They were unable to determine where this tablet came from.
When Kai was absolved of her crimes, she chose to join Homily and Vincent, certain that she'd never be bored in their company. Though she'll never truly know what happened to him, she tries to carry on the legacy of the captain who she dueled that fateful day, honoring his memory.
