Session 71 A new Experience in the Socrates Forest.
General Summary
27th of Ares
The companions of Shining Eclipse have departed the city of Babylon on board the river boat called Silver Current. Three female wood elves have jumped overboard about 45 out from the dock. As the crew of the Silver Current look for the three woman the deck hand, a dwarf by the name of Thrix Ironspine, also notices a platoon of Moon shadow Rangers watching very keenly. This sets of the Dwarf as he begins to grumble about bad omens and this trip may be cursed or worse they may all die. The Socrates forest and its protectors will not hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect the forest. The Silver Current has taken on 30 passengers as well as more cargo with the final destination of Thyrdus and Rivendell. The 30 passengers are aboard to see the wonders of the Socrates forest with the hope that they will see something. Nobels pay series coinage to travel through the forest in hopes of seeing something in this forest. The river boats and the wood elves make some good coin for these trips. Nothing is guaranteed to see anything, yet people still pay coin in hopes of seeing something. The forest is known for unusual creatures that can be seen like herds of Centaurus. Passengers have to sign contracts stating that they will not violate any rules and they will respect the forest and all it laws, and bylaws set forth by the three houses who job is to protect the forest.
Three hours into the trip the companions along with the passengers who were on common deck area where lounge chairs were set up to watch the view of the forest and its beauty. The weather is beautiful and sunny and tempature was around 65 degrees. The companions kind of on the alert spotted an odd looking wood structure floating down the river. As the boat moved to avoid colliding with it several members of Shining Eclipse and a few passengers notice that it what was left of a house that was built into a large tree. The house showed signs scorch marks as well. Zandi noticed right away what this was as she grew up in a similar type house. You may not know this, but the wood elves cities are built on or in the ancient trees of the forest. These cities are carefully built in the tree tops of the trees. Only the wood elves know how to find these cities. Non elves have seen these creative cities, but need a wood elf to guide them for they are carefully placed and hidden. One who gets lost in the forest will never know how many villages and small cities they pass under. While some companions were focused on the floating spectacle some companions saw 13 wood elf bodies below the surface of the river with arrows sticking out of their bodies being pulled by the strong undertow of the river. Several crew members also saw the bodies but said nothing. But ships alert level went up as Captain Marinos secretly passed the word along. The halfling cook by the name of Mira Thornberry passed out freshly baked tarts to the passengers to distract them until the captain could get clear of the incident. A half-hour later the Silver Current came a clearing of massive chopped down tree stumps more of the well build houses strewn all over the clearing and bodies. As the discussion on whether to stop and investigate or move on as they had a schedule and delivery that need to be done. Emotions overcame Zandi, a sworn protector of the forest and a member of House Legolas ordered the captain to set the anchor and get some canoes so that the Shining Eclipse could investigate. The passengers looked on is disbelief and shock at the clearing let alone the multiple bodes that lay around the clearing. Arceven who was a proponent of just moving on did not realize the power of the wood elves in this region. Let alone with the rank of Leaf Warden (Captain in Human Terms). Captain Marinos followed her orders immediately. Captain Marinos looking at Arceven warned him that the wood elves have full authority let alone a Leaf Warden of the Moon shadow Rangers.
Jasmal not feeling well stayed aboard the Silver Current to help with serving food and water and help calming the passengers as look upon this night mare. The bonding of Karrin with Ishtar caused him to go into the deep trances that all Dovahkiin go through was just coming out his trance and had to don his armor before he could join his companions. The rest of the crew went ashore and started to search for survivors when out of the forest appeared 23 unicorns along with riders on their backs. They had their weapons sheathed at the moment, but were very alert and would draw in heart beat if there was any signs of trouble. In shock and disbelief two of the riders approached Zandi. Speaking in Elvish the one who appeared to be an officer muttered it can't be she was killed I saw it with my own eyes. As tears started to stream down his face as he got closer to Zandi fully recognizing his former Leafwardend and came to full attention as did the rest of the unit. Zandi who recognized his rank as Glade Keeper (Lieutenant) looked in shock as well as she was looking at one of her former newly promoted Pathfinders ( corporal). She had thought and was told that her unit was killed by Lillian Harker who had enslaved the young elf for the past five years. Killed by her husband who Zandi still believed was a good man. The Glade Keeper as what her orders were as he relinquished his command to Zandi. Together they searched through the bodies finding 19 wood elf survivors, 6 halfling, 3 centaurs, and 3 firbolg. They all told of a tail of a group of pirates who came upon there shores and stated chopping down the trees and their homes. Once it was discovered that they stumbled upon the village the order was given to kill the men and children and to take the women be be sold into slavery. The company of elves told Franchise K that they would make sure that the survivors were cared for and to get going. The Glade Keeper begged for Zandi to return to Thyrdus and turn herself in and get things straightened out. He thanked the members of Franchise K for their help.
Returning back to the Silver Current the river boat continued its trip up river to Lake Kriton. The buzz on the boat was the sightings of unicorns. The passengers only saw the two that revealed themselves, but it made the trip worth the coin to see the majestic creatures even though it was night mare setting to see them. Once again Mira Thornberry out did herself preparing a fantastic evening meal for the passengers, crew and members of Shining Eclipse. The meal eased the fear of some of the passengers at the spectacle that they had seen. The Deck hand Thrix Ironspine dropped the anchors to prepare for the evening. With the exception of the luminous lighting that the forest set off at night it was dark and no boat would dare travel these waters in these conditions. While he was securing down the boat he continued to grumble about bad omens with everything that had gone on that day. Captain Marinos approached Arceven and asked if they could help in standing watch tonight considering the day's events. The 24th hour of the 27th areas the passengers, crew and companions witness a spectacle no witnessed by non-elves. The sound of music starting coming from the forest. A beautiful memorizing melody. first the music started out as what you would use for morning as if the forest was the morning the loss of life of the elves that did not survive the attack. Then Zandi who was trancing in her room made her way to the pilots house climbed on top the house where Dimmir was sleeping and began belting a beautiful melody matching the music. Her eyes were translucent. Here voice was beautiful and breath taking. Then the music got louder the harmony blending with her voice she sang of sorrow, joy, loss, and hope. On the shoreline other wood elves could be seen joining in with Zandi, but she remained the lead. This went on for about a half hour then it ended as if it never happened. She went back to her room with no relocation of what happened. the elves on the shore faded into the forest. But the magical effect of the song sung by the elves and the forest gave a magical healing effect refreshing all on the boat as if they had a long rest. For four hours the forest and river remained in this tranquil feeling only to be shattered as Drowned Zombies started boarding the boat seeing revenge for the death of Dante the former companion who tried to betray the party.
