Space Shepherd Profession in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Space Shepherd

Space shepherds are a profession very few people undertake, due to the immense physical strength and endurance needed for the job.

Space Bubbles

Space shepherds typically call space bubbles home. These microbiomes, found across space and Aavar's River, float independently from solar systems and any other orbits. They are formed around asteroids and can be anywhere from a few feet in length to thousands of kilometres. The larger space bubbles make for perfect homes for space shepherds and due to them being independent land the shepherds can utilise them however they like.

Many shepherds will grow crops in their space bubble, so they don't ever have to leave. Those with animals with more complex needs and diets, such as severins, will have to leave their space bubble since food like primordial jelly is not renewable.

Reputation

Space shepherds are greatly respected, since they keep out of the way of all drama in space. Most space shepherds seek a life of solitude, and don't often venture out of their mostly self-sustaining space bubbles. If a traveller passes by a space bubble clearly inhabited by a space shepherd, they may stop and give them a small gift as a sign of appreciation, especially since space shepherds are never the richest of people.

Animals

Space shepherds herd a lot of animals, and it mostly depends on what galaxy and galactic arm they are in. A common creature kept in the Milky Way are severins, large invertebrates infamous for their diet of primordial jelly, a scarce resource in space. Some space shepherds will house terrestrial animals, assuming the space bubble's core is large enough to support the animals. These animals are bought from markets in different space colonies, bought illegally, or even stolen from planets.

Slimes have an innate ability to communicate with animals in space. It puzzles both slimes and other sophonts on how they can communicate with these animals, but space shepherds embrace it. Many slime farmers are on call with space shepherds, and when a shepherd has an issue with an animal a slime is called in to help. Some animals develop void insanity despite being suited to living in space, but slimes can reverse the damages that are caused by the condition.

I want to be a space shepherd. Sounds peaceful.
