Sea Cell

Tethered to the Latica Ocean bed, Sea Cells are floating settlements that drift through the seas. Sea Cells were an invention designed to tackle overpopulation in certain areas.

The definition of hyper-brutalism, Sea Cells are a bland white or light grey hexagonal city sticking hundreds of metres below the surface of the ocean. Large lips on the edge prevent waves from rolling over into the city, and with an open top, civilians have access to sunlight at all times.

Most Sea Cells are found a few miles off the coast of the Sian Lowlands. Boats travel on a schedule to these cities, twice a day.

Sea Cells were initially built to solve overpopulation. The ingenuity and modernity of these settlements drew more people in, especially those of higher classes. It soon became a fashionable thing to live in a Sea Cell. Nowadays many are looked at with pity, especially those of the lowest class.

Pollution

Sea Cells have caused massive amounts of metal poisoning in the Latica Ocean, and littering have decimated local ecosystems. In the last hundred years, almost 45% of kelpfield biomes within a 100 mile radius of a Sea Cell have gone extinct.

Life In A Sea Cell

My goodness, this life... is horrible. It's the same, day in and day out. I can't keep living like this.
— Disgruntled civilian

The lowest levels in a Sea Cell are home to the lowest class residents. Apartments are small and contain just the essentials. Pathways are rarely cleaned, leaving mold to grow in cold, damp corners.

Higher up are the middle class. They are more taken care of, with easier access to luxuries. The highest class live at the very top levels of a Sea Cell. Apartments often have several floors and prioritise great views into the ocean.

While some jobs are available in Sea Cells, such as in schools, shops, hospitals, emergency services, and other sectors, many commute to the mainland. Most low-class residents commute to the mainland, forced to maintain a strict schedule thanks to boats only running at 6am and 6pm every day.
