Glacial Wolf Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Glacial Wolf

Glacial wolves are large carnivores found in the frozen plains and the boreal forests of Caira and northern Kaltia.
They can be incredibly dangerous, running upwards of 80mph and having enough jaw strength to crush a car. It also has an impeccable sense of hearing, from up to a mile away and buried in the snow. The only problem is they hear very low frequencies, lower than most noises animals make. They also have terrible eyesight, which is unfortunate since the herbivores they eat are found in open areas.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Glacial wolves have a very stocky build. They have very light fur with 2 rows of spikes on its hunched back. The wolves have a small head with a large lower jaw, extending past its upper jaw and many teeth sticking out. It possesses two tiny yellow eyes. Glacial wolves have two large front legs with 4 claws each, one noticeably larger claw. Its hind legs have 4 claws, 3 pointing forwards and one pointing back.

Genetics and Reproduction

Glacial wolves mate for life, females having 1-4 cubs every year. Gestation period is 205-258 days. Cubs are a dark brown colour, gradually fading into white as they age. Cubs will stay beside parents for the first 2 years, then they will start venturing out into the wilds. If the parents come across the cubs as adults they will never have a confrontation as two stranger wolves usually would.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Glacial wolves are carnivorous, eating only meat. They will attempt to capture their prey, be it sickle deer or mammarcti. If they do not capture prey for a while they will scavenge for carcasses. Their poor eyesight and hearing makes it very difficult to consistently catch live prey, thus often resorting to scavenging.

Behaviour

Glacial Wolves are generally quite vicious, attacking most creatures it comes across. If it doesn't misses. Its poor eyesight mixed with its terrible frequency hearing pairs for a useless predator. The wolf is territorial, each pack claiming a few square miles of territory, marking it with urine.
