Arrin's Glowshroom

Arrin's glowshroom is a large species of prehensile mushroom found in the Phosphorian Caves. These mushrooms have the longest stem of any other mushroom species, hanging from the ceilings up to 20 metres long. The stems of the mushrooms can be fried, and are often turned into small fried snacks.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The most notable part of the mushroom is between the stem and the bulbous cap. The cap is a perfect sphere shape, a whitish blue with a blue bioluminescence. When the mushroom reaches 3 weeks of age, the gills extend outwards into a flower shape, the gills resembling petals and the cap as the ovary. The stem is a pale white colour, and it can grow up to 20 metres long, gradually getting thicker as it reaches the roof. These mushrooms hang directly from the ceiling.

Genetics and Reproduction

Spores are spread when the mushroom spreads its gills. For the first few weeks of their lives, the spores start gathering on the gills, sticking to them with an unusual substance. When the gills open up into a flower shape, the spores fall off, and thanks to gravity they float up to the ceiling and roll about, eventually settling into a crack in the roof and growing.
This only happens once during this mushroom's life cycle, and they produce thousands of spores, only a couple will grow into a mushroom.

Growth Rate & Stages

The mushroom grows its cap first, and they sit tightly on the ceiling of the caves. Then, when the cap is fully grown, the stem starts to grow, as it ages it begins to grow and hang down the caves.
When the mushroom is about 3 weeks old, the gills partially detach themselves from the cap, and dangle like petals on a flower.

Ecology and Habitats

The mushrooms only grow in the phosphorian caves, where the phosphor radiation has caused them to become bioluminescent. The mushrooms hang from the ceiling of the cave system, where they grow not only in the large dens but also in the narrower tunnels, only growing a metre or so long.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Surbaria People love to harvest these mushrooms from their native cave system, cutting the stems off, chopping them into small chunks, and frying them. These stem chunks make delicious snacks, enjoyed with everyone throughout the year.
