Eos

During the Great Expansion of the mid 3000s CE, millions of star systems were colonised, with humanity settling any system that had potential. Most were done so to allow for a free expression of culture, political systems, or religion, were a corporate endevour for mining or other such industrial and profit-making, or were a scientific project, learning about the endless wonder and mystery of the wider galaxy. Eos was one of the latter, as the system it is based in has no planets, habitable or otherwise. Instead, Eos' central star is a Strange Star, made up entirely of strange quark matter. Eos was originally a scientific research station, but was thought lost after the disaster of the Amnesiac Virus. Only recently rediscovered, it has managed to retain its independence despite interest from the Federation of Xah.   Eos appears to have been initially designed as a Dyson shell; a network of linked stations entirely surrounding the central star but does not appear to have completed before the Amnesiac Virus struck. The survivors of the disaster collated the resources originally intended, and constructed a simple form of Shellworld instead. Over the following centuries, the occupants managed to convert their original research station into the largest mechanical computer in Known Space. At some point, the human occupants of Eos died out, but by that point the station had attained a simple level of sentience, and was able to continue. Robots using mechanical 'brains' are now the station's only inhabitants, operating to maintain the central intelligence.   So far, the Federation of Xah and the Northup Alliance are unaware of the station's true nature, having been warned to keep their distance from the station entirely. A powerful xaser array on Eos maintains its defence, allowing it to continue in its mysterious works.
