Known Space

Known Space is the colloquial term for the approximately 28 million star systems colonised by humanity. Whilst exploration has continued outside of this region, and colonisation continues to take place, the number of stars, their type and their collection of planets and other bodies is well known in this region. The region is approximately 1000 light years across, although it is not spherical, being more of a flattened, elongated sphere.
Current population estimates for the region are about 1.2 quadrillion individuals, but this is probably an under-estimation, as the number of unregistered colonies and settlements is impossible to know.
