Optical Recognition Scanner

ORS (Optical Recognition Scanner)

The Optical Recognition Scanner (ORS) is a cybernetic implant that provides the user with the ability to instantly scan and access detailed information about individuals they observe. Implanted directly around the optic nerve, the ORS allows its user to pull up detailed demographic and personal information about people encountered on the street by simply looking at them. The scanner pulls up a variety of personal data, including name, race, sex, criminal history, and social media profiles, all displayed in the user's field of vision. The ORS can be fine-tuned to omit information or re-order the presented information. ORS implants are standard amongst law enforcement and security personnel, and are popular implants for business owners and those in the upper class.

While the ORS has its utility, it also comes with significant privacy concerns. Its widespread use contributes to the already invasive surveillance culture of X-City. Critics argue it facilitates an environment of constant monitoring and provides businesses with a nearly untraceable outlet to unfairly profile customers. The data pulled by the ORS can be manipulated or used to harass individuals with little recourse, blurring the line between useful implant and total invasion of privacy.
