Liquid Tree

Liquid Trees are a bioengineered innovation developed by X-Corp as a solution to urban pollution and deforestation in densely populated areas like X-City. Introduced in 2110 during X-City's first great population increase, these artificial trees consist of large transparent tanks filled with a bio-synthetic fluid containing microalgae. The algae absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, mimicking the natural photosynthesis process of traditional trees utilizing a fraction of the space required.

Through consistent innovations and biomechanical improvements, each liquid tree is currently said to produce the same oxygen output as 100 traditional trees, making them far more space efficient. Over time, these microorganisms do need replenishing due to the gradual absorption of pollutants in the environment. To combat this, X-Corp has created proprietary "bio-packs" containing genetically enhanced algae samples that can be dropped into any liquid tree setup. Liquid Trees that are owned by the public or smaller businesses rarely splurge on these enhancements. The cost of these refills has incentivized a small third party market to appear, with individuals illegally selling their third-party algae cultures for liquid trees. Though not routine, any liquid tree on private property that is found to house unapproved algae species can incur a fee on the part of the property owner.

Despite this overall innovation, X-City still has a lower-than-average air quality, one that is noticeably worse the more south you go.
