Kaertheria

Kaertheria, also known as "Noble Pox". Is a disease that appears nigh exclusively in the nobility. Originating in Aberia at the end of the Age of Lords, it seems to have been the reason for the beginning of the nomadic lifestyle the people of the country have continued to the present day.

Transmission & Vectors

It's an air and waterborne disease that spreads like wildfire in afflicted populations. The main vector is the wounds the disease causes. Touching them will likely result in catching it.

Causes

According to common belief, the disease is a curse placed on nobles by the common folk. This stems from the account that Theogorn told Donnchad ap Briain that he needed to stop the Great Aberian Banishment or be cursed. When Donnchad went ahead with it, he came down with the first documented case of it.

Symptoms

The symptoms are few, but they are terrible. The disease is characterized by its black bubbles - blisters full of blood. These are incredibly painful, and, should they burst, they will bleed continuously, unable to clot. Since they burst easily, this is a major concern.

Treatment

The only real treatment is to avoid any activity that would burst the blisters. However, since they don't clot, once they are burst, there is little that can be done. Bandaging the afflicted areas works well enough, but the drain on the body will eventually take its toll.

Prognosis

The disease has a one hundred percent mortality rate. Whether from the disease itself or complications as a result, getting Kaertheria is a guarantee that you will die in the next year.

Prevention

Avoiding the infected is the only way to avoid it. Since no one knows how it starts, complete avoidance is the only solution.
