Oenar, God of Oracles Character in Wralath | World Anvil

Oenar, God of Oracles (Oh-aye-nar)

Depicted in books and art as a humanoid with a blindfold over their eyes. Oenar’s followers and Oracles alike often wear blindfolds. If you happen to encounter them in the overworld, Oenar takes the form of a drow, often with a blindfold on.

Oenar’s Oracles are chosen by Oenar himself. There can only be 12 oracles at any given time, however, it is predetermined who will replace the Oracle who has passed. Often the child that is to replace them will be found by their 10th birthday as they start showing signs of ‘the Gift’ at around age 7. Becoming an Oracle is a lifelong commitment. Their lives are not extended as Oenar’s gift often shortens the lives of those who receive it, usually because seeing the future and receiving prophecies takes a lot of energy from them. Oracles can choose whether or not to give up their ability to see when receiving Oenar’s gift. Those that do tend to live shorter lives. Currently, there are 11 Oracles in Wralath. Adenma, the Fire Oracle passed peacefully in her sleep at the age of 97. The search for her replacement is ongoing.

Many people have remnants of ‘The Gift’. Such people often become fortune tellers, palm readers, tarot readers, and psychics. These individuals have it because they had a family member who was an Oracle.
