Kro A'aruaiki: Great Sovereignfly

Summary

The Great Sovereignfly once descended from the stars onto the world, hovering over the land and spreading its wings from Retkokua to Yukur and enveloping the world in darkness. The people of the land were distraught. "How could we possibly bring the stars and sun back? We cannot possibly hope to reach something that high up, nor can we hope to talk to something that large!" They built a tall structure, but it crumbled underneath its own weight. They asked the birds to carry the humans' message, but the birds couldn't understand the sovereignfly, nor could they carry the humans to the destination.   The humans at long last resigned themselves to never seeing the sun again and determined to make their future work. They fashioned fire to light their way in the darkness, music to comfort them whenever they thought of the sun. A Kauaru of Retkokua, without any knowledge of the power inside her, channeled this determination of humanity. She grew in height, first to the point of reaching the Great Sovereignfly, then to the size of the Great Sovereignfly, joining it in covering the world.   "Great Sovereignfly," she said. "I have family, and a village, and a whole world of people that you have robbed of sunlight. Please lift your wings that they may see it again."   "What joy!" said the sovereignfly. "I have looked for life throughout the galaxy, and at last I have found life that I can befriend! You can join me in the stars, and together we will explore the universe!"   They departed the world, never to be seen again. Fire and music found new uses, and humanity found itself all the stronger for the trials. Clouds dot the landscape, blocking the sun as careful reminders of the necessary vigilance of humanity.

Historical Basis

The sovereignfly is an actual floating creature, its wingspan ranging from that of a human's to twice that of a human's. Human storytelling just expanded the creature's size to planet-size proportions, allowed the creature to live in space, gave it two extra sets of wings, and allowed it to talk to humans.
