Karekya: Little Peat Colony

Defences

Karekya's only defence is its insignificance. It is neither the largest peat manufactory nor the closest to potential enemies and rivals. However, in case of emergency, there are a nightwatchman and two town watchmen for basic patrol.

Industry & Trade

While most village-folk have other crafts and pursuits (such as putting food on the shelf), the majority of external wealth comes in through a couple dozen peat harvesters. As a small token of goodwill, each shipment of peat comes with a small wood carving: the mark of Karekya. In reality, it's a way to give the elder women of the hamlet something to do to sustain their retired-fishermen families. The village is, on its own, completely sustainable, thanks to the fishing industries and small garden-farms.

Infrastructure

There was a relatively large squabble in the colony about bring in large rocks for cobblestone pavement. The argument against was that the terrain was traversable enough to cross, even with a large load, and that roads would be a wasteful use of Karekyi resources. As a result, there is a half-finished cobblestone road, from the peat farms to the local docks, that goes no further.

Assets

Karekya is an inland haven for shallow-sea and river fish, as well as a good source of peat and lumber. There is a vein of copper nearby, but there are more plentiful veins that are closer to the big cities.

Guilds and Factions

The peat harvesters often consider themselves to be the economic backbone of Karekya and so have piqued the ire of fishermen and farmers alike. Apart from this conflict, the town council, comprised of a dozen or so elders, is concerned about a small group of residents, the fencers, wanting to fence off their houses from the rest of the community.

History

At first, Karekya was a fishing village, formed when a passenger ship crashed on its way to Yukur. Welkwu's burning desire for fuel, however, brought dozens of citizens into the peat industry.
