World of the Holy Grail War

The Holy Grail War is an old ritual that, through its completion, decides the ownership of the Holy Grail -- a near omnipotent wish granting device -- through a bloody battle royale. This competition is a proxy war, conducted by seven mages, termed as 'Masters', through their individual familiars, or 'Servants'.   These Servants are Heroic Spirits, entities of heroes who had achieved grand deeds in their life, becoming something akin to objects of worship long after death. These Heroic Spirits are removed from the constraints of time and the cycle of reincarnation and 'stored' in the Throne of Heroes. The Throne of Heroes exists outside of time and the World, meaning it exists in the past, present and future all at once.   This World is a reflection of the modern world we as outsiders know. There are a number of things that we can comprehend, but there is also plenty of supernatural and magical things we know only in fiction. In the World, almost anything is possible.
