Ballad of the Rune Shrine

The ballad of the Rune Shrine was composed by Magee to commemorate the The Twisted Runebeast of Fertile Crossing. It can be sung to the tune of "Ballad of Billy the Kid" by Billy Joel, although more hauntingly Irish. Somehow.   At a shrine in the woods by Fertile Crossing
Slept a magic with a danger carved in rune.
But the altar drinking blood
Released power like a flood
By the light of the hunter’s moon.
Well it started when the boar attacked young Letham
He cried out as it gored him to the bone
And he fell down in surprise
Looking death right in the eyes
As his blood wet the altar stone   Then a monster stalked the village
Killing beasts and men alike
And no one knew how many more would die
And folks never saw it coming
But they knew that it would strike
And the villagers could only wonder why   Well they sent young Doyle to ride for help from Easthome
And the boy returned with heroes at his back
And it served their legend well
For the folks they loved to tell about
When Lorkan the Bear came to town   Well he brought with him Iseult, a Fen Folk skalding
White Brennus with the demon in his eye
And the ranger Oenghus and
Khepri the Cedonian
To kill the beast so no more would die   Well they figured out the riddle
Of the beast and shrine and rune
So they carried Letham’s corpse into the night
As they laid him on the altar
The air glowed as bright as noon
And the heroes finally knew they'dwon the fight   Near the shrine every Fertile Crossing farmer
Felt the change to make them stronger than they were
But the sacrifice of blood
Sowed into the stone and mud
Dims the glory that the heroes won
