Critias

'Old ideas can rejuvenate. Carthage, the ideal, is old and new again.'
— Critias

There are fewer elders within most domains within Modern Nights. One of these few elders still around is the Ancient Greek philosopher Brujah, Critias. The ancient has been around in Chicago since the 1940's becoming embroiled in the web of politics. Critias' deep political skill and wit, sharpened on millennia of intellects, caused him to quickly rise up the ranks to become Brujah primogen.

This was a position he held for a long time. Between nights of politicking, Critias could be found teaching courses at Chicago University. In an attempt to teach younger Kindred on not only the laws of the Camarilla, but also the nature of their condition - Critias would found the Eternal Academy.

In the sixties he sired Damien, however he would dominate the boy into forgetting the event. The irony of Critias espousing the virtue of teaching the young while also abandoning his childe, was not lost on those when the truth of Damien's lineage came to light.

Critias would remain a member of the Primogen Council during Prince Jackson's reign. Though tensions were clearly showing between Critias and the Ivory Tower. The Anarch baron, Anita Wainwright, would court Critias - hoping for him to switch sides. However, as time would tell, it would take something dramatic for Critias to abandon the Ivory Tower.

The Eternal Academy was blown up along with a wing in Chicago University. Critias' childe and Sheriff of the Chicago Camarilla, Damien, met the Final Death in the explosion. It just so happened that a mortal was caught in the explosion, CIA junior analyst Alec 'Ace' Martinez. Stories are mixed on what happened, some say that Critias embraced Ace to save him - while others say that Ace was the victim of a Frenzy and Critias embraced him to atone for his 'sin'. Whatever the case, the night where one of Critias' childer met their end, another was embraced into the night.

While not openly claiming Ace, Critias lobbied for the fledgling. He would convince Jackson not to kill the boy. Eventually, after Jackson disappeared, Critias came out to his childe. He apologised to Ace and vowed to be there for him. A promise he would struggle to uphold.

Tensions would reach a boiling point at the night of the Asylum Elysium. The Primogen Council of the city as well as movers and shakers set a lavish Elysium at the Asylum nightclub, the epicentre of the troubles within Chicago. That night Critias' lover, the mortal Mahavir was found murdered in the bathroom of Asylum - a Sabbat symbol painted in his blood on the mirror. Critias flew into a frenzy that had to be quelled by the Gangrel Primogen, Rosa Hernandez. He would regain composure and excuse himself for the night. This would end up being his departure from the Camarilla and he would pledge himself to the Anarch movement.

The night's that followed Mahavir's death are a blur for Critias. He struggles to recall what transpired over those nights. Reviewing CCTV footage, Ace saw Critias the night of Mahavir's death walk into lake Michigan. He could not find footage of Critias re-emerging.

Whatever the case, Critias is with the Anarch movement - he still holds his position and influence over Chicago University. He has re-built a facsimile of the Eternal Academy to focus less on the 'laws' of the Masquerade and more on the condition of carrying the beast and how Kindred can ethically tame it. He also hosts frequent debates between ideologies and Kindred.
