When you are a whisperer in the dark, one thing that can be relied upon is your ability to dig up dirt. Gustav was once a key information broker within Chicago's
Nosferatu community. He always had dirt to sell to any Kindred for a price. He was really good at it too. Nobody knows how he attained a network of information and spies, but Gustav always delivered. This made it exceedingly hard for any Kindred to keep secrets from
Prince Lodin - which is a big reason why Lodin ran unopposed for so long.
Gustav was bought to Chicago by
Evelyn Walters and her broodmate
Matthew Strause after their excursion through Europe. The Nosferatu seemingly gained a network overnight, proving his worth to the Prince by exposing
Modius' plans to take on Lodin's empire. It was this preemptive warning that gave Prince Lodin the edge in snuffing out Modius' campaign before it could even begin.
Evelyn and Gustav were openly an item at this time. Gustav doted on her and obeyed her every whim. It was clear that Gustav was less loyal to Prince Lodin and the
Camarilla cause - more loyal to Evelyn. She had one of the most powerful spy masters around her finger and he was more than willing to oblige to her requests. It is often speculated that Evelyn used Gustav to take down political opposition and further her standing within the Camarilla court. It is very likely that Evelyn could have made it to the top if things continued; but of course, nothing lasts forever.
Scandal erupted when it was discovered that Evelyn had a ghoul that she had turned illegally. Not only that, but this ghoul turned childe was also her lover. This enraged Gustav who finally saw that Evelyn never cared for him and manipulated him for her own gain. He reported her crimes to the Prince who was none too pleased. Lodin had created a city wide ban on embracing; sure some Kindred had creative work arounds for this (such as embracing childer in Gary), but the practice was still highly illegal in Chicago.
Evelyn was punished, domain taken from her and her childer killed before her. This act would forever destroy the relationship between Gustav and Evelyn. The two became bitter enemies since then. Unfortunately for Evelyn, Gustav was too good at what he did to be caught out by her. If she wanted revenge, she had to search for other means.
Gustav disappeared during the 90's. His ultimate fate is up for debate; some believe he may have been a victim of the Lupine attacks, while others think he may have been washed away during the Chicago flood. Some even speculate that Evelyn took advantage of the chaos during both events to finally end her lover turned enemy. Whatever the case, Gustav has not been seen and it has been long assumed he did meet the final death, one way or another.
