Osther, the Blind Horseman

In the folklore of the Darí Plateau, Osther is a legendary horseman who lost his sight. He rides across the hills and valleys of the plateau in solitude, and many travellers claim they have spied him in the distance on a lonely path or on the crest of a hill.

The stories about Osther vary widely from one place to another. All stories agree that Osther is always seen on horseback, and that he is unable to see. In most versions he is described as a young man, although a few stories report him to be a very elderly man, with a long beard and white hair. In most versions of the legend, he is said to have either empty eye sockets, or a rag wrapped across his eyes. His horse is usually described as either white or black.

Spread

The myth of Osther, the Blind Horseman, is told in many parts of the Darí Plateau, especially in the areas of Beomark and the Arankai Highlands.

Variations & Mutation

Depending on where the stories are told, Osther figures at best as a kind stranger, and at worst as an omen of misfortune. Though many superstitions claim that he is a ghost or spirit, he is never described as violent or dangerous. In the eastern parts of the Arankai Highlands it is even regarded as good fortune to meet Osther upon the road, and a sign that one will have a safe and successful journey.

Only in some regions is this figure called Osther. More commonly he is simply known as the Blind Horseman.
