Personal history

Born aboard a decoline on 28th Achuary, 693, Cynthia has lived most of her life in the sky. Her parents, Reder and Sofia Flax (née Herald), were aerial traders, both originally from Birdseye, whom would pilot their ten-fast The Flaxen Lady up and down the coast of Beomark and the Arankai Highlands trading small and lightweight goods in the various towns and ports along the route. Cynthia spent most of her first ten years living aboard the aircraft, although it was not uncommon for her to spend several months living with her maternal great-uncle, Joseph Herald   In 703, while Cynthia was staying with Herald, The Flaxen Lady crashed into a cliff, killing Sofia instantly. Reder survived the crash, although he suffered damage to his legs which, after becoming infected, required first one and then the other to be amputated. The loss of his wife, his livelihood and his legs drove Reder to drink, and he eventually lost all contact with his daughter. Reder's current whereabouts are unknown, but he is presumed to have died on the streets of Birdseye.   After the crash, Cynthia continues to live with Joseph Herald, and begins working in his tea shop, where she sleeps under the counter. Cynthia's last living relative, Herald, is a miserly old man, and, while he is never cruel or unkind to Cynthia, he also does not offer her any affection or sympathy. She does, however, have the security of a home, and the freedom to go where she pleases in her free time. She does not receive any formal education, but she learns skills relevant to the tea trade, such as basic arithmetic and record-keeping, and the properties of different types of tea.   On 26th Geruary, 706, Cynthia finds a note mistakenly included in Herald's tea inventory. The note was written by a member of a dissident group, and contains the information that an armed battalion is being sent from City of Cajalho to Birdseye, under the command of the famous Field Marshal Alexis Ashenfeld in order to quell the growing discontent and violence brewing in the city.   Cynthia is still learning to read, and must say the words in order to understand them. As a result, she reads the contents of the note aloud in Herald's shop, while customers are present. Herald, fearing that news will reach the Silkfaces and he will be incriminated in a plot, angrily throws Cynthia from his house, and tells her never to return. At some point after this event, the tea shop is raided, and Joseph Herald is never seen again.
