While working for her great uncle, Joseph Herald, Cynthia discovers the note concealed in a packet of tea. She mistakenly reads the note aloud, causing her great-uncle - out of fear of being seen as complicit in a Municipalist plot - to throw her out of his care, effectively leaving Cynthia both homeless and unemployed.
