Republican Party

Founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. One of the formerly two traditional parties of the U.S. political system. Often also called the GOP for Grand Old Party. Fractured into two in 1970. One part became the Constitution Party while the other (at the time-larger group) remained the Republican Party. While the Republican Party remains heavily influential in American Politics it no longer is the main conservative party in the country. Current Leadership is Representative Newt Gingrich from Georgia, Senator Mitt Romney from Massachusetts, and young Paul Ryan Representative from Wisconsin.
