V-Units

V-Units are a form of currency that had taken prominence in the world around the turn of the century, acting as a universal way to spend money. Although initially adoptation of it was slow, by the time The Withering occured, it quickly became one of the few ways for anyone to spend money in a world where jobs have taken a different role than before.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

VU makes use of a similar type of quasi-magical and technological advancements that are found with The Machina, storing one's currency in a fourth-dimensional space that can only be accessed via a card that is aligned with that of the user's soul.

These cards are made out of metallic alloy, composed partly of Brass and Stainless Steel-- the latter of which has been enchanted to be able to hold Mana. This material is then enscribed with particular patterns that allow for it to sync up to the user's soul and connect to the aforementioned fourth-dimensional space. Thanks to it's supernatural nature, this allows for the any VU held by the user to be almost perfectly secure*. As a side effect, however, their currency will remain with them in death. Due to the difficulties that arise when being deceased in a post-Withered world, the currency will become useless to them.

History

The VU system was established in the early 2000s by the Deepcore Foundation, originally intended for use between governments of different countries as a way to easily exchange money in a secure fashion and to get around international laws. The individuals that would be entrusted with this money would be known as Cashrunners. It wouldn't be until 2001 when, in an attempt to appeal to the fear and terror that sprung up on Earth after a string of terrorist attacks, the VU system would be rolled out to businesses and customers to use.

While traditional money such as the American Dollar reigned supreme for a long time, it wouldn't be until the collapse of the world economies following The Withering that the VU system would be adopted widespread.
