Tokli'ye

O' Devourer, look upon your faithful children! In your divine image we have transfigured our hideous bodies!
- The Serpentine Priestess

Zealous Agents of the World-Devourer

Few have witnessed the Tokli'ye and lived to retell the encounter. The peasantry regard them as beings of myth, akin to the Daemon warned of by their Holy-Men. They are known as blasphemers, a cautionary tale spread by the devout to maintain their flock. Yet the transfiguration of the Tokli'ye is a deliberate act - an unholy rite by which the Devourer's form is realized. They are more beast than Man, their skin having become scale and their legs turned to tail. An upright, serpentine agent of the Devourer is all that remains. There is no Humanity here.   By torchlit night their feverish chants grow to hysterics as the Devout are consumed in religious fervor. Their dark Idol commands its presence from a central pit, from which serpentine figures twist and coil. They lead the ritual, the swarm's words growing bolder and more delusioned with their pulse.   The peasantfolk are bled to the Devourer by twilight, satiating the hunger of the Idol. Rumors spread of missing persons, yet those who investigate the deep forests beyond the safety of their walls soon disappear as well.

Origin & Creator

Only speculation exists as to creator and creation alike of the Tokli'ye. Leading theories suggest that, similar to the Orl, the Tokli'ye were the result of alchemical transmutation applied ritualistically. Unlike the Orl, no alchemist such as Omeron is documented to have studied such a transmutation. As such, no records exist that could confirm or deny their alchemical or mythological status. Any knowledge regarding the Tokli'ye remains a closely guarded secret by the fanatical Devourer's cult.

Myth & Legend

I remember each and every one of the faces I saw that night. Like pigs after the slaughter, it were. I can tell you from experience: There ain't enough booze in the world to keep that memory from resurfacing. Stay out of the woods.

Sightings

Folklore

Fuelled by tales spread by the Holy-Men, the commonfolk have begun to regard the Tokli'ye as daemons spawned by the heretical acts of the disobedient. In regions of particular religious fervor, sightings increase notably in contrast to others and are oft accompanied by accusations of blasphemy.

Disappearances

Those unfortunate, humble villages at the edge of civilization are often the victims of malevolent beings seeking weak prey. Constables who care far more for their title rather than its associated duties make such challenges more difficult for the commonfolk, given their unwillingness to participate in investigations deemed too "risky".   A sudden rash of disappearances across the countryside has led to growing resentment toward the lower levels of the enforcement structure.
