Freedom Coalition
The colonisers would see us all enslaved, mere servants to their masters. We refuse such a fate!As you can expect, the colonisation of the New World was not particularly welcomed by the people already living there. Many tribes and island nations tried to fight back, but ultimately they crumbled one by one under the onslaught of the much larger nations of the Old World. But what if they could all band together and fight off the invaders? As promising as that idea sounds, the Freedom Coalition could not possibly unite everybody. Still, the loosely formed federation steadily grew in size, as more and more lands fell to the colonisers and their neighbours joined the coalition out of fear. The current-day Freedom Coalition consists of hundreds of different tribes and clans from over dozens of islands, trying to slow down the Old World's encroachment.
Structure
For the most part, the Freedom Coalition is an idea. You could hardly form a government stable enough to land over so many different people scattered across the ocean. While there is formally a council where every tribe sends a representative, you could count on one hand the number of times that council was actually summounded.
Public Agenda
What happens however is that Coalition members try to stay in touch with their neighbours and help them out. For example, if an Ardenian Empire decides to invade an island they might just find themselves fighting warriors from five or ten islands nearby as well. Even from some of the already conquered lands. And should such an invasion drag out, more and more Vurradian warriors would arrive as additional islands answer the call for help.
While that does not usually stop the invasions from happening, it makes them very long and costly. Very unpredictable. Colonisers never know how much resistance they will be met with, and how many soldiers they will need. That really slowed down their expansion, and is why people choose to join the Coalition.
History
At first, there was too much disagreement among the different tribes. Still is, in many places. But as the Third Wave of Colonisation kicked in, the danger that is the people of Old World became too large to ignore. So a number of strong tribes marched against the invaders, and lost. Their warriors were killed and their lands taken.
The survivors proposed what would become the Freedom Coalition. They eventually got defeated too, but not before more islands joined the movement. Sometimes the Coalition warriors manage to hold back the invaders, but most often not. And as they fell too, their neighbours joined the ranks. The Coalition's land keeps moving deeper into the New World, and who knows where they will be able to draw the line one day.
