Gryphon

A gryphon is a mysterious, mythological creature said to once have existed in Windoreld. No one is sure if they ever really existed as there is no proof of such creatures.   They are said to be large creatures, with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. The tales say they are able to fly and soar just as any eagle, and run as fast as a lion.   Some tales paint Gryphons as magnificent good willed creatures. Others say they are dark and feast on humans, flying over towns and causing terror with their large wings and bodies.   In the markets of Arenam, some merchants sell pickled meat and even present it as gryphon meat, though only someone stupid would fall for their lies.

Historical Basis

The myth is not based in any event and no one knows where it came from, though it a popular myth and there are many tales about these magnificent beasts. In history there have been many people claiming to slay one, even claiming to be descended from them.

Spread

The myth is common in Valgalia, though different versions may be found in Vimerias.

Variations & Mutation

This myth has many versions, the original and most prominent versions are mentioned above. Other versions are that the front was of a lion and the rear of an eagle. Some speak of this creature being part dragon too, breathing fire and bearing golden scales.

In Literature

The myth is included in many written tales and stories. A King of Doranor even lied and had it written that he slayed one and carried a trophy of it’s claw. Another nobleman had declared he was of Gryphon blood and his only dream was so pass on this legacy with his children.

In Art

Exquisite drawings and paintings of Gryphons can be found inside important documents within the Kingdoms of Doranor, of course only depicting what they believe them to look like.
