The Legend of Wandering Spirit
Though it is widely believed that the spirits of the lost depart our plane of existence during Ouroboros, there are--as there are with many things--the exception to the rule.
One of those exceptions is Yarwena, a wandering spirit of a dragon that is said to inhabit the woods on moonless nights.
Her story is a very tragic one. It is said she had three children who loved to play in the woods outside their cavern. One day her children never returned. She searched for days, calling their names but never found them. Even other dragons joined in the hunt but it also proved unsuccessful. Yarwena, however, never gave up the search and continued to wander the woods day after day, never eating or resting. It is said that her desire to find her lost children was so strong, her body continued to roam the woods even after she died. Even when spirits are called back to the other side of the veil, she refuses to leave without the children she lost so long ago.
It is said that her spirit continues to wander the forests of Geolga, especially on moonless nights, searching for her missing children. If she comes across any young dragons wandering the woods, she takes them back to her den and they are never seen again.
Now this is obviously a tale invented to scare young dragons from wandering the woods alone. Young dragons are still vulnerable to large predators and risk getting lost. Some clans will still attribute lost dragons to her taking them away.
This tale has not changed much over the years, but sometimes parents will say that Yarwena will steal away unruly hatchlings who don't listen to their parents. The youths often tell outlandish variations such as Yarwena only stealing dragons who are weak. There have been many who claimed that they saw the spirit once or twice in the fog.
Whether or not the story is true but is likely based on real events. It would not be the first time children, human or dragon, have gone missing and were never found. Many adults still hold on to the fear believing that she will mistake them for one of her children having grown up after so many years.
It is hard to blame them as no amount of strength can defeat a spirit and being alone in the dark in the middle of a forest does have ways to playing with one's mind.
